Re: Fixed wheel: Why? Why not?

Still in lockdown here in Oz I culled the fleet. Sold our entry level tandem, still have the Thorn tandem. Sold my Surly LHT, still have my Thorn Mercury.. Took two nondescript bikes to the local bike recycle place. Took a bmx which I got off a skip to the grandson. Leaving my dust covered fixed whe...

Re: Parish Churches

"...the album became a little boring." But just think how useful it could have been to get rid of guests who out-stayed their welcome! :D ("And now as a special treat I have prepared a slide show of all 226 Cornish parish churches...") Do you still call it a slide show if they a...

Re: Rode into a car

PH I am a fellow Mercury owner and I did something similar a year ago on the daylight saving change Sunday In Australia. I was returning from a longish (for me) ride with the sun low in the sky and I was head down. I sensed an obstacle in front of me and swerved violently but not enough and caught m...

Re: Belt drive instead of chain..why? why not?

I recently read a journal on CycleBlaze. A Canadian couple purchased Tout Terrain tourers from the American head agent. They noticed that the wife's belt and sprocket were showing abnormal wear and did not receive any useful advice from the place that they got the bikes. On tour in Europe the belt b...

Re: Belt drive instead of chain..why? why not?

in the article above I think they use manufacturer's data for transmission efficiency. This isn't representative of all belts (they vary) and furthermore I think it is almost certain to be at constant torque. I don't think I have seen any manufacturer's data for a pulsy torque load; constant torque...

Re: Shipping bikes abroad (to Australia)

We looked into sending a bike frame to Australia and Parcelflight seemed to be the cheapest. The parcel size is limited: "Max weight 20 kg , Max size 100 x 70 x 50 cm , Max girth 300 cm". All right for a frame and the rest of the bits could perhaps go as hold luggage? Some manufacturers h...

Re: Computers with BIG distance info

I don't own any kind of phone, or a t.v., and have no desire to. No landline? How do people contact you? My wife has had her pay as you go flip phone for ages with a plan that her credits never expire (her latest expiry date for her credits is some time in 2036!) I am the Treasurer of our local St ...

Re: Real names

I worked with a chap on and off for a number of years and I was informed he passed away a couple of weeks ago, the funeral was last Thursday and there was a website you could log into to watch the service. All those years and I always knew him as Colin, turns out that was his middle name as he didn...

Re: Tandem Tyre Choice in 26 x 2.0 ?

I have had a set of Supremes 36 X 622 on my Thorn Mercury half bike and like their performance. So much so that I have purchased a set in 26 X 1.75 for our tandem for its next tyre chhange. Mike ah thanks mike...another vote for the Supremes... interested you are looking at the 1.75s...Another vari...

Re: Mudguards

I overtook loads of people today. One person, clearly younger than me couldn't even ride up a hill and had to get off and walk half up. Clearly has no business even being out on a bike.

He will be on an e bike next time that you see him!

Re: The tools you never needed until you got then use a lot thread!!

Simple idea, have you ever got by without a tool for so long then bought by it and found out that it's a very useful tool? I recently bought molegrips for an issue I had (now resolved). I've never felt I needed them until I found my usual tools wouldn't work. I tried them and problem solved in seco...

Re: What should the UK govt do about Branson & Virgin Atlantic?

Meanwhile Down Under Virgin Australia is in Administration after our fearless leader ScoMo declined not to come to the party with the requested AUD 1.4 billion on the grounds that 90% of VA is owned by four or five local Asia based airlines and poor Rick owns less than 10%. There is some concern how...
