Re: Any Point Me Going Tubeless

My Giant Defy came set up tubeless 18 months ago - had a few unexplained reductions in pressure but never by much. I was so impressed by this, I converted my hybrid to tubeless which entailed buying new wheels (built up for me). TBH, it was a real baptism of hell-fire setting them up. You are suppos...

Re: Ridgeback hybrids and their potential

I have a 5yr old Ridgeback Flight 03. Once I'd ditched the saddle & pedals, it was fine. Not too familiar with the brand over & above what's been said, I enjoy riding it & have not encountered any issues. Mine is chain driven with 10sp x 3 derailleurs.

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

It is good to do as much as possible oneself If one cannae/willnae it, it is still worth trying to understand Not doing something oneself doesn't imply inability. I'm able to do many servicing tasks on bikes but sometimes choose to let someone else do it - especially when it's free as is a yearly f...

Re: Garmin 820's touch screen

The brightness is currently set to auto & touch sensitivity, set to medium. Used it for the 1st time for a short ride around town of under 2 mikes - it's telling the recovery time is 6hrs but it's still severely under-estimating av speed with Auto Puase set to stop! The s/w has been updated to 9...

Re: Garmin 820's touch screen

Des That’s just the info I need! Thanks for writing such a comprehensive reply. My Edge25 can’t adjust the min speed for auto stop/start (set to ~7 mph) so under-estimates av speed & Garmin Connect is far from perfect so my expectations of the 820 are moderated by experience & others’ commen...

Re: ...if it’s ever possible to enjoy cycling in the rain

Used my hybrid to comute this morning instead of my Defy - it has mudguards - was raining hard in mid-Berks. It’s the aftermath I'm not so keen on such as putting on half dried gear for the journey home. Fortunately, was dry & warm so I ended up dry & warm pretty quickly. Not the case in win...

Garmin 820's touch screen

..if the Garmin 820's touch screen has got any better since launch? I'd be happy with the 520 Plus if it could navigate on the go.

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

. They did suggest drops were better for longer rides due to having 3 potential hand positions -. i'd agree with that, and add that the number of positions is way more than three. I'd also add that if you have interrupter levers on the top of the drops, riding on the tops isn't much different from ...

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

if I had to ride all the time in an urban environment I would probably have flat bars, simply because they offer the best and quickest access to the brakes. As it is, dropped bars suit most of my riding best. In an urban situation I 'cover the brakes' nearly all the time, in order that I don't have...

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

I checked my pads after a recent annual free service - the front had less than 0.5mm left so I replaced them. The rear was fine. Needless to say, I inspect mine more regularly! Some bicycle users can't seem to do their own maintenance. This seems to be bad for the bike user but good for the profess...

Re: ...if it’s ever possible to enjoy cycling in the rain

When I went off-road with CTC, there were a number of riders proclaiming their love of mud. They, when observed, avoided mud as much as possible like everyone else! The same applies to rain, it's something we learn to tolerate. In winter, when dark & in heavy traffic - it's difficult to see due ...

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

but I don’t buy the idea that adding discs doesn’t add between 0.5 to 1kg depending on the groupset. I personally think it’s a price worth paying. I'm wondering if there are a lot of people who now think the same and rate reliable, rugged tyres and braking over lightness as they are using the bike ...

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

It seems that the claim of disc braked road bikes being heavier than rim braked road bikes has passed into folklore, for ever more to be cited by those who oppose them. I have one of each, from the same manufacturer, and of the same LINE. (Spesh Roubaix - old rim braked - new disc braked.) The clai...

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

... It seems possible that road bikes might largely (obviously not entirely) skip the cable-disc stage and hydros will end up becoming the standard on all bikes. Maybe; we'll have to wait and see how it pans out. My observations of the last couple of years in many shops was that most budget to mid-...
