Re: Drivers on phones

I think there should be a bounty on them? all those cyclists with cameras could make a bit of money... Yes, a bounty for each cyclist-captured bit of evidence concerning each bit of motoring-Toad law breaking! 10% of the large fines to the cyclist and 90% to the State's new Department for Road Mend...

Re: Sportives - love them or loathe them?

Hi, A few months ago I got my feet wet on a cycle path, I decided that it couldn't get any worse so rode through next flood, you get into the zone like cycling down a overgrown lane not used much, stingers blocked my path for several hundred yards, and once stung so much it can get no worse (pain),...

Re: Just ridin'

Lack of strawberry jam might be the cause of this overly-romantic rambling. We must ask the lad if he was, at the time, also considering consumption of the squashed hedgehog he just passed. The bonk has many peculiar side-effects, including hallucination and even delusion. Or perhaps he's just been ...

Re: Etiquette on thread necromancy

Perhaps these resurrected threads are a desperate attempt by temporarily (or even permanently) disallowed cyclists to obtain entertainment, as their ankle heals up or their bumboil evolves through the various inconvenient stages? Or it might be a bot (not one with a bumboil but the cybernetic variet...

Re: Compact double road

Never had one before but my new road/gravel bike has one. I'm far from convinced. I think I've only used the big ring about twice. The little ring is OK for road work but struggles at lower end off road on the steeper loose stuff. I'd imagine that it would also struggle on road fully loaded in the ...

Re: Wide road tyres, are they dangerous

IME badly squared off tyres can very easily turn any bicycle (or motorcycle) into an evil-handling POS. As the OP has mentioned, sweeping turns on a fast descent (with big dropoffs etc) are the last place where this should first become apparent to you.... Thus the OP's report of what happened I don...

Re: Wide road tyres, are they dangerous

'squared off' tyres are indeed iffy to ride on. ...... cheers Are they? My current 28mm wide back tyre (30mm on the rims) has a slightly flattened profile due to many miles. I can't feel any ill effects (or any effects at all) when leaning over in the corners. And I do lean over in the corners, oft...

Re: Sportives - love them or loathe them?

I know what an Audax is, never ridden one What exactly is the difference between an Audax and a Sportive? Are there other types of mass rides? Seems maybe we are a bit conservative and old-fashioned, not so many diverse opinions? Not much enthusiasm for Sportives. Yet It's pleasant to ride w...

Re: Book recommendations and why?

....... BTW, can anyone explain why we have such complicated psyches and brains, full of too many thoughts? I thought we had evolved to be hunter-gatherers or subsistence farmers, or have our minds changed faster than our bodies? Diolch The human is infested with that second evolving replicator, th...

.......At the end of the day it is each to their own and the only teason I have put my two penn’orth into this thread is that I am surprused and a liittle disappointed at the lack of tolerance shown to a fellow cyclist. There's no such same-thinking/acting group as "fellow cyclists" any m...

Re: Air horn to deter pedestrians

Everyone knows there is absolutely no problem in going through a red light on a bike in the right circumstances And everyone has a subjective opinion, collectively covering a vast spectrum, about what "in the right circumstances" means. If one closes the eyes, rings the imaginary bell thr...

........ The truth I suspect, is that almost everyone will buy the 'best' (in terms of components, quality, weight etc.) bike they can reasonably afford. If you accept that, then what is the 'best' is simply a matter of degree, as is what one can afford. To a multi-millionaire, several 10's of thou...

Is there such a thing as an individual? I've never met one. Every person I meet seems composed of, and enmeshed in, a great vortex of other persons, not to mention the historical meme-nets in which we all are caught, via the language and all it's Pandora escapees. Including "me" (whatever ...

Re: Suitable speed limit for minor country roads

A local road near me, which is a cycle route carries 1195 vehicles per day. The average speed was 39.5mph and the 85th percentile recorded at 47.2mph. The number of two wheelers was averaging 49 per day. The road is about 6m wide, without a dotted line or side markings, no long straight stretches, ...
