Re: Hatred against Cyclists

Ooh, must have missed that one. Shame the best ads tend to be for the most pointless products.

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

I think that if people say that they feel the EU is undemocratic, then they should be listened to and the EU should hear. I'm not sure if that feeling has been propagated by the daily drip-feed of anti-EU headlines from the Mail, Sun and Telegraph but it obviously has some roots or it wouldn't reso...

Re: Hatred against Cyclists

Excellent idea. It would be lovely to make an occasion out of it; get as many peeps as possible to go out on their bikes that evening, then relax at home doing something more productive. #Say-No-To-ClickbaitTV - do something more enjoyable instead! Maybe we could start a campaign, with a catchy slo...

Re: Facial Recognition by the Authorities

Not sure that "bias" is the right word. Firstly there is a limitation in technology, in that features "stand out more" in some ethnic groups. For instance, eyebrows on a white face are higher contrast than on a West Indian or African face. Not a bias, simply a problem with the t...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

... The Brexit situation has divided people along political faith/scepticism lines, then. Those who want to leave have nothing of scepticism in their vision of sunlit uplands, lucrative trade deals, wads of government money for this, that and their other favourite thing, from fishermen and farmers ...

Re: Hatred against Cyclists

I heard a TV trailer for it last night, it sounded like they intended to show both sides of the "argument" and the name was deliberate audience-bating. However, it is a TV documentary so I don't expect much and don't plan to watch it. It will be nice if they point out how many "cyclis...

Re: Cycling UK helmet briefing updated

Apart from making the headline fonts a bit bolder, it looks like the only changes are to the Evidence document linked at the bottom. Some of the articles it cites are from the last couple of years, so I guess it's a simple update. This is probably the old one, in case anyone wants to do a comparison.

Does that change of it's being said by someone who is a curmudgeon and knows it? :)

Re: Sneaky mobile speed camera van - do you warn people?

...There is cultural acceptance of speeding in the UK. Not all drivers speed, but far too many, do. p.s. cross posted with Mike Sales, but the point remains. As a child I remember my father telling me it was common for planners to assume people would go up to 10mph over the posted limit, and reduce...

Re: Sneaky mobile speed camera van - do you warn people?

No, all of them, how much is it going to cost to fit such a device, a few hundred quid. We know how little it costs to fit GPS tracking devices and speed limiters, there's already speed sign readers that control speed but there are simpler and more accurate methods when installed in the signs. Woul...

Re: Sunscreen - what to think

I see what you're saying - my (empirical) view is that the Aussies are outdoors all year round, and recognized a serious skin cancer problem back in the 70s. They are now far more careful than Brits ("slip-slap-slop!" ). Remember that the ozone layer has not yet recovered fully: More than...

No, not many. I believe speed traps have been set from time to time on at least one local Saturday night racer route, but I can't remember the last time I personally saw one this far north. I was thinking of my occasional trips to the deep south.

Re: Sneaky mobile speed camera van - do you warn people?

Speaking as one who's driven probably too many miles over the years, there are only two things that annoy me about speed traps. The first is when habitual speeders notice them and suddenly slow down to well below the limit, causing a small but unnecessary interruption to the traffic flow. That's a g...

Re: Summer sun advice

I use a fair bit of sunscreen and don't want to sound like I'm dismissing the importance of protecting one's self, but the blurb under Myth 6 seemed odd, to say the least. The point that "Some studies have found that tans only offer protection equivalent to using factor 3 sunscreen" was li...

...There is the argument that this might be a bit like A&E doctors being keen on cycle helmets, but on the other hand they're not looking at acute, traumatic incidents but rather a lot of chronic effect... I've often wondered about that, after all dermatologists are likely to be looking at chro...
