If you mean shimano 7 & 8 when you say "them" then I've been running a mix for ages with no probs at all - i think as long as you keep it resonably clean then it should work fine. Thus I may be tempted to try the campag levers in the future 'cos I don't get on with most shimano levers (apart from sora which are not always that easy to find SH).

Well, I was only poking light hearted fun at them - if anyone offered me a Rolhoff for free I'd bite their hands off
I think the trouble he had was that there is a bit that came away from both the hub and the frame, that makes sure that the disc is lined up in the caliper properly, and it was getting this back out and back into place that was the prob! Probably improve with practise.

pigman wrote:If you're running 8 speed sora, then swap your STI levers for some campag ergo 10 levers. It will work straight off and you don't need to buy any other mech, cassette, chain etc. If its 7 speed sora, then this won't work. With campag, cables are concealed and bags etc have no hinderance.
Are you sure: shimano 7 and 8 are virtually identical in the sprocket spacing and mixing them is no a problem. Is it that the campag 10 isn't an exact match to the 8spd and thus this slight error is amplified by the 7spd?

if he's got disc brakes then he could have some 700c rims mounted in MTB disc hubs. Will cut down on the clearance if mudguards are required but will allow the use of light race tyres.
if rim brakes then just go for some good quality light XC wheels and you'll have to put up with the choice of MTB slick availible. The choice is OK if you are looking for a commuting/touring tyre but they are not up to the same standard, speed wise, as the better 700c race tyres.

I was offended by a Rolhoff. Picture the scene - late at night - very dark, cold, pouring with rain, mud everywhere, miles from home and one of the group has a rear wheel p*nct*re.
OK, don't mind giving someone 5mins to fix a p*nct*re, afterwall anyone can get one.
But when he also has to spend 10mins faffing to get the rear wheel out and another 10 mins trying to reconnect all the gubbins (inc disc brake), it gets a bit beyond a joke: ended up very very cold and very very very wet. And my dinner was in the cat when I finnally got home.
Or was the owner just a bit cack handed.

if the cables foul the bag then there are a couple of bodges to get around it.
You could use that braided silver cable that TMobile use - this lets you put a much smaller diameter curve into the cables than normal outers.
Or you might get away with bodging a couple of Travel Agents on there, just using the 1 to 1 pulley, not the reduction bit.
Or even, maybe a couple of rear V brake noodles.

We attempt to "spread the word" by putting leaflets/posters in local libraries and doctors as well as handing them out at local charity rides. Plus we also have an interweb site so if anyone searches on the local area name and "cycling" then hopefully they oughta find the Section.
As for how I heard about - I think the answer is lost in the mists of time - probably it was mentioned in a cycling magazine.

Accrobat
Wierd one this....everytime I go to the forum (via the link in my favorites : http://forum.ctc.org.uk/index.php) acrobat reader starts up just after the CTC background colours appear, but just before the actual forum table appears. Once the opening acrobat screen goes acrodbat appears to either not be running or to crash Acord32.
This has only been happening since this afternoon - it was fine before then.
What's all that about then? Only does it on the CTC forum and not on other implimentations of the same SW?
Win ME, IE6.0.28.
