Re: Shimano Alfine 11 - Longer term reliability

Hi Lesoudeur, Am I assuming correctly that the two Alfine 11s you've ridden were both set-up to perfect yellow lines alignment in 6th gear? Was the cable length done by the book as well (184mm from the ferrule-exit to cable-nut as described in the service manual: http://www.koga-signature.com/docs/M...

Re: Shimano Alfine 11 - Longer term reliability

Thank you kindly for taking the time to elaborate, Brucey. I see exactly what you mean. Sticking pawls is what I had experienced with my other IGH, a Nexus 8R25 that was acting all crunchy like it was it's last stand or smth all because of huge amounts of Shimano white grease sticking all the way in...

Re: Shimano Alfine 11 - Longer term reliability

...... MOS2 lithium complex NGLI2 grease lubrication..... IME this sort of lubrication is going to cause problems inside a shimano IGH. I am interested to understand the reasoning if you care to expand, Brucey. I understood molybdenum disulfide would ensure perfect lubrication even in the most extr...

Re: Explain this. Mystery Alfine 11 cure

I see what you're saying, Brucey, and it makes perfect sense. I have made sure the dropout nuts are firmly seated and have replaced the original Shimano axle enclosed bolts with standard non-enclosed bolts that give a more tactile feel when securing the axle to the frame. To expand a bit on the corr...

Re: Alfine 8-speed ?clutch? problem in gears 2, 3, 4

As long as we're not sure exactly what the service procedure was, it is safe to assume it was done incorrectly even if following Shimano instructions. Regarding sticking pawls, I'd like to share my experience with a Nexus 8R25 I had bought 2nd hand for an every-day city/trekking biker. The hub exper...

Re: Shimano Alfine 11 - Longer term reliability

After some trials and tribulations (beginning with the usual 2nd and 10th slipping gears going to reversed 10-11 gears and yellow lines not aligning on the return/ when detensioning cable / upshifting - dismantling the hub at least half a dozen times and going from 75W90 synthetic with MOS2 to ATF D...

Re: Explain this. Mystery Alfine 11 cure

I totally agree with your point in theory , Brucey, and have applied it with a very bad behaving hub resulting in gears 10-11 switched and shifting up and loosing drive; When depressing the cable it would not line up in the same spot everytime. That was when the end cable nut was set to a distance a...

Re: Explain this. Mystery Alfine 11 cure

Finally my A11 is behaving! The only fix for it was screwing the barrel all the way in and having _exactly_ 184mm cable length (or as accurate as I could make it without the specific Shimano tool). BTW, as important as this is and dealing with the amount of complains regarding A11s, one would think ...
