Re: This must be a first

They can’t be any worse than the last few sets of ‘official’ Shimano cleats I’ve had. If they’re making them for Poundland, it might explain why they aren’t as good as they once were.

Re: Giant defy carbon. Bottom bracket creak

I’ve had creaks coming from, what I was certain was the B.B. and it’s turned out to be everything but the B.B. that was responsible. Q.R. skewers and the springs on the ends are a good source of creaks, so are the seat rails, and in at least one instance, it was the rim telling me it was about to fail catastrophically.

Re: Self-extracting crank bolt problem

The last self extractor bolt I had stick on me was a nightmare. I had to use a dremel multi tool to cut it off. I hate them. I use these now.

Re: TdF Sportive - First Time - Need Bike Advice

CX bikes are pretty much designed for sport CX rides, an actual sport.

Try this

Stunning value for money. A great bike.

There may not be any left online in your size, but they may have some in store.

Re: Tyre Size & Recommendation

I wouldn’t touch Continental tyres with someone else’s barge pole. I’ve had GP4000sII and GP 4 seasons, and they have proven to be as durable as toothpaste. Personally I’d recommended Michelin’s Pro4 endurance, and I can’t speak highly enough of the new Pirelli P Zero Velos I’ve had for about 5000 miles on one of my bikes.

Re: Do the helmets in accidents involving helmets get investigated?

In all my big accidents, I have been hit from behind whilst stationary, waiting at junctions, and hit side on by drivers who didn’t give way to their right. A couple of them were unfit through drink or drugs.

Re: Do the helmets in accidents involving helmets get investigated?

I’ve done a fair bit of impromptu helmet during accident testing over the years. They’ve certainly stopped me from sustaining serious head injuries. Helmet manufacturers want to sell helmets, and don’t want their profit margins eroded by costly studies, when there are standard tests, which will do, to get the minimum necessary regulatory ‘ticks in boxes’ to enable them to be able to sell at a profit. As far as I know, no one has commissioned any robust scientific studies into the efficacy of cycle helmets. It would be a difficult thing to do, as people involved in accidents where a helmet would have helped, but didn’t wear a helmet, tend to be dead, and dead people don’t talk much.

Re: Intermittent creak

Q.R. Skewers and / or Thru Axles are a good source of mystery creaks. give them a good coating of grease and check the springs at the ends.

Re: road surfaces after the winter

I was out in the Surrey Hills yesterday. I rode from Woking, out into the Hills at Newlands Corner, Leith Hill, Whitedown Lane, Ranmore Common, Box Hill, and back to Woking. Some of the pot holes on that route ( particularly towards Send / West Clandon, and on the return around Brooklands / Old Woking) we’re beyond belief, you’d have needed a rope and crampons to get out, if you’d hit some of them. Still, the councils had spray painted around them, so that’s okay

Re: Tubeless tyre sealant renewal

Yes, the sealant will dry out and form a useless ball of rubber over time. The stuff with the Kevlar fibres is too new to market to make a valued call on just yet. It’s best to clean out the congealed sealant before adding the new sealant.

Re: How's my posture?

I’d have said ( with just that photo to go on ) that either your saddle is too far back, or you have too much set back on your seat post ( if that’s the saddle as far forward as it goes). It looks like you may benefit from a shorter stem, with a greater positive angle on it as well. It’s not easy to make a definitive call with just that photo to go on, but those three things do stick out, to my mind.
