I have the same problem arthritis in the ball of right foot
Started in 2021 and took about 6 weeks to settle down
Flared up again 5 weeks ago, I used Voltarol twice a day for first week and started cycling again after a couple of weeks
I use SPD pedals and try to keep cadence above 90RPM if I can (I have a Garmin with a cadence gizmo)
Did have a steroid injection first time but trying to avoid it this time due to the possible side effects
I'm 68 now and do about 30 mile a week but do avoid the steeper hills
Found a download pdf from NHS Lanarkshire Podiatry "Hallux-Limitus-Regida" which helped a lot

Re: Pain in big toe
I take blood thinner (Apixaban) so normal NSAIDs aren't suitable so I'm on Colchicine.
The odd thing is the first attack was June 15th and I was walking quite a lot after that (2 or 3 miles at a time) with no problems, I knew it wasn't right just put it down to an injury but when I went cycling it came back.

Re: Pain in big toe
Seen the GP and she said it was gout (no sign of infection) and gave me some pills, looking back on it I think it was down to dehydration on that first run.

Pain in big toe
On June 14th I went out for a 10 mile ride including a 50 m climb which I've only done twice, when I got back I felt fine, that night I awoke around 3AM with a painful big toe which kept me awake and gradually wore off during the day, decided to lay off the bike for about a week and a half, when I went out again did 6 miles and same thing happened.
First run was using toe clips second using new clipless pedals.
I'm 64 now and cycled a lot up to around 1990 then started again in 2017 never had this problem before.

Re: Sports direct
Hi, bought some Muddyfox Tour 100 shoes from Sports Direct, after about 18 months or 700 miles or so the SPD mounting plate on the right shoe has come away and is protruding out of the sole, the thing is I use them with flat pedals (never liked the idea of cleats), managed to ease it back and then used duct tape to patch them up.
Maybe best avoided?

Road/Footpath
Have just seen a Footpath sign go up on a local dirt road, the road has some houses on it and is wide enough for a single car, great for cycling on (watch out for some major pot holes, the house residents fill them in when they get really bad in the winter), the question is am I breaking the law cycling on it as the Council have decided it's a footpath.
It's a really good way through to local lanes, another police sign has appeared at the other end warning that motor vehicles using it for anything other than access to the houses will be fined £1000 and could be seized.

Re: Bar Ends
The bar ends seem to be more comfortable, was getting neck/shoulder ache which seems to have eased off (early days only been on for a week), have lost some neck mobility over the years which may be a factor.
Riding in "Normal" position uses one set of muscles, riding with bar ends uses another.

Re: Bar Ends
Thanks for that, they do feel like they'd "Catch On" something given half a chance.
Bought the bike in Shotton (Flintshire) near where I live.

Bar Ends
Have just fitted some bar ends to my Raleigh Strada Hybrid, they are really good for changing hand positions and pulling on going up hills. However I've never seen them fitted on new bikes, is there a problem with them I should know about?
