quiksilver wrote:I think it's a Sebring but I am sure Busaste will tell me, lol, am hoping it is as that will makle two now that I own. I fancied getting a 2nd so I could have one as a fixed gear and one as a racer. That saddle will have to go though, it's awful.

Definitely a Sebring!

It has quite a few non standard parts. The derailleurs should be Shimano 600 with Shimano levers. Cranks would be SR Apex 52/42, rear freewheel, Shimano 14 - 24. Brake levers Shimano with 'safety lever' extensions. There would also be Shimano quick release machanisms too. Wheels would be Shimano bolt on hubs laced to german made Shuramann chromed rims. Some Sebring frames had lugs all over whereas others had the seat tube brazed directly to the bottom bracket shell without a lug (mostly the earlier ones). The frames were made in Taiwan and were pretty good if a tad heavy.

I'm up for that! I live in Chorley, Lancashire but will happily travel to meet shed loads of Viscount owners.

How about we meet at the former Aerospace factory along Oxford Road in Bilston? The factory is still there. Not great scenically though!

I'm happy to meet any where.

BTW does anyone know the provenance of this curious Aerospace Pro (assuming it's the pro as it has the Aluminium fork)? It has a decidedly French flavour with a really beautiful TA crankset and equally tasty Huret front and rear mech.

The bike is a collection of none standard parts which have been fixed to a 1976 Viscount Aerospace Sport frame. The fork is not one from the Aerospace Pro, GP, etc. range as the rake is too shallow. TA cranks, Huret gears, sidepull brakes, brake levers, small flange hubs, saddle, handlebar stem, etc, etc are all none standard after market fitments. In other words, it's a 'bitsa' but in my humble opinion a very nice one!

Bendo wrote:One thing I just noticed is that the Aerospace Sport in the picture has the chromoly fork. I hadn't realised that the aluminium fork (see how I didn't use the term "death fork"? hehe) was only standard on the Pro. The Sport pictured also has Maxy cranks like mine but I wish I could see the chainrings. It looks like it's got the three pin where mine has the five pin. It also has centre-pull brakes (Viscount? Dia-Compe?) where mine came with sidepull Weinmanns. And by the look of that rear derailleur it has the long reach Titlist, not the racing Crane rear mech.

I'm always amazed by how many differences there were in factory spec components for the same bike. I wonder why that was. Like Busaste I wish I could find someone who used to work for Viscount-Trusty... b

I know a huge amount about Lambert and Viscount having spent the last few years researching the former companies history, models, etc. I am trying - within the constraints of family, work, etc. - to get it all together in written form. It is a fascinating story (especially to a Viscount nerd like me), so fascinating in fact that I could not commit all of it to paper as I lack the financial means to defend myself in court should a libel case be brought against me. Also, there is so much BS and misinformation on the net about Viscounts and Lamberts that something HAS to be done. So, watch this space.

Regarding your post Bendo I hope this helps:

a) "I hadn't realised that the aluminium fork (see how I didn't use the term "death fork"? hehe) was only standard on the Pro".
It was standard on the Aerospace Pro, GP, Grand Sport and Supabike.
Well done for dropping the 'death fork' tag. The alloy fork has never killed any one. The mark 3 design is strong and probably never will...
b) "It looks like it's got the three pin where mine has the five pin".
Viscount only used 3 pin Sugino Maxy cranks. 5 pin cranks are an aftermarket fitment. Having said that it is just possible that the odd bike may have left the factory with a Maxy 5 pin crank (see below).
c) "It also has centre-pull brakes (Viscount? Dia-Compe?) where mine came with sidepull Weinmanns"
The CP brakes were designed by Lambert and made for them by a midlands casting firm. Although I say "designed" they were heavily inspired by Weinmann 999s! The recess in one of the CPs, a la Weinmann, originally had a 'Lambert' sticker (white lettering on a blue background) which later changed to Viscount (check out the pictures of my 99% original red Aerospace Sport on this forum to see what I mean). Weinmann sidepulls were never fitted to Aerospace bikes made up till 1979.
d) "And by the look of that rear derailleur it has the long reach Titlist, not the racing Crane rear mech"
The 1975 - 77 Aerospace Sport was fitted with a Shimano Tourney GS RD. Originally it was intended to be a small jockey Shimano 500 for a 14 - 28 freewheel but this was changed as Viscount wanted the Sport to have all round - club ride, race, tour, commute - every man (and woman!) appeal hence the use of a Shimano 'skip tooth' 14 - 34 (or 32) freewheel and a long jockey RD.
e) "I'm always amazed by how many differences there were in factory spec components for the same bike"
Chronic parts supply problems and big sales made it almost impossible to maintain the same parts on each model within the range. This led on occasions to the use of a non 'standard' part appearing on a model. I know of one Aerospace Pro for example that left the factory with a Suntour RD rather than the ubiquitous Shimano Crane.

In Viscount's heyday of the USA "ten speed racer" boom at least one container of 400 bikes a week was shipped out there. Shame it all went pear shaped in the early '80s.

Bendo wrote:Thinking of making some t-shirts. Here's a prelim design. The Aerospace typeface is rough because it's taken from a photo of the chainstay decal (on the bike! If you look hard you can make out the cylindrical shape of the letters.) which I imported into Illustrator and then turned into a vector graphic. So it smooths things out a touch but there's still some of the rough edges. Perhaps I should wait until I can scan some brand new flat decals... b

Re: Viscount bicycles!!

What year was this Viscount Aerospace SE made? It was not 1974, 76, 76 and 78. Any one know for certain? I have never seen one in the metal and it is not in any of my sales brochures. I am baffled by this curious beast. The brazed on seat post pinch bolt housing is early Viscount (it was dropped in '77 in favour of a chromed clamp) yet the components suggest 1978. BUT, it is not shown in my 1978 brochures/magazine adverts. Perhaps it is the last Aerospace model ever produced? In 1979?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Viscount bicycles!!

Bendo wrote:Hi all

This is my first post and I must say I'm loving this thread. Busaste, it's great to read your posts and find out so much about Viscount bikes.

I have two Viscounts, both red.

The first one, an Aerospace Sport I bought from the original owner. I knew him when he bought the bike new. My brother bought a Peugeot 10 speed a the same time and I was amazed how much lighter the Viscount was by comparison even back then (since realised that my brother bought the Peugeot with all steel components, incl. wheels... urgh!). I've ridden that bike since 1985. The bottom bracket has been reamed and threaded to take standard BB sets. Currently the frame is stripped and waiting for a new paint job. And it's my favourite bike. Ever. Too.

The original components still on that bike are: Sugino Maxy crankset, Shimano Dura-Ace gears (Shimano Crane rear mech), Weinmann side pulls brakes, Viscount branded high-flange sealed bearing hubs.

The other bike I bought about 6 months ago was one I haven't seen anywhere on the web: a Viscount Aerospace Victor. Same red paint job as the Sport. Same frame geometry. Only difference is the head tube has lugs joining it to the top and down tubes, all other joins are fillet brazed, like all the welds on the Sport. Curious mix of components too: five speed Shimano Positron gearing (early index shifting via a handlebar mounted lever with dual push-pull cables), steel wheels and crankset, Weinmann side-pull calipers. Seems like it might have been the "commuter" model of the Aerospace range seeing as it had the sweep handlebars for a more upright riding position.

Here's the Victor in its recent single-speed, coaster brake incarnation.

b

PS - Love those Panaracer Pasela tyres. The only quality tyre I could find in 27 x 1 1/8 with a gumwall.

Wow! Not seen a Victor for ages. In fact I have only seen 2 for sale in the last 3 years and never seen one 'in the metal'. Built between 1975 - 76 at the Bilston factory it was a direct rival to the Falcon Super-Tourist De Luxe (ask your Dad!). Essentially the same spec as the Falcon right down to the upright SR bars, Maxy cranks, flam red paint, half chrome forks, full length guards, CP brakes, saddle bag, 5 speed wide(ish) gears, etc. The main differences were the magnificent Aerospace frame, Viscount QR wheels (cheapo bolt ons for the Falcon) and the radical Shimano Positron RD. The Positron is a monumentally significant bicycle component - the first proper attempt at indexing. Former Viscount dealers have told me that it was a nightmare to set up though.

The Victor is a truly rare beast as it never sold well despite being cheaper and better than the Falcon. May be fans of these bikes - foolishly - bought the Falcon or splashed out on a Dawes Galaxy?

If I was you I would convert it back to original spec. and savor riding around on one of the UK's rarest bikes. Aaaaah, the glorious 1970s :) ...

Regarding your Aerospace Sport, it is worth bearing in mind that the frames were factory powder coated. A good colour match is easy and it is miles cheaper than a wet finish. Also I have NOS OEM Aerospace Sport frame stickers if you want some.

We should all support Panaracer for making such excellent 27" tyres!!! Michelin and others have all but abandoned us for hideous black walled monstrosities.

Goldie wrote:Ahh, I wondered what happened to that! I was umming and arring about buying it for what felt like ages. Glad to see it's gone to a good home. Of course what I'd really still like is the pearl white KP Crisps sponsored team replica, which is the grown up version of my first ever racing bike...

Busaste, your Pro looks amazing - what on earth did you do to get your spokes that clean? I've worked through pretty much the entire repetoire of metal cleaning products in the cupboard and just got a dull grey colour...

I nearly went out of my mind polishing the spokes! I used fine grade Scotchbrite saturated in Solvol Autosol to scrub off the layer of grime and corrosion. After this was cleaned off I then polished the spokes with a soft cloth and more Solvol Autosol. Doing 72 spokes like this is hard work on the fingers and very time consuming. Can't say I enjoyed it either! After doing this I then set about doing the spokes on my Aerospace Sport! It is worth it in the end because they come up like new. Still, I appreciate that this kind of madness is not for every one!

Re: Viscount bicycles!!

cyclingthelakes wrote:How odd, very odd here Christmas Eve and Viscount Bicycles threw me a curve I haven't seen... what is that you may ask?? Busaste and everyone??

A branded leather Viscount saddle. Ebay # 260694489959 / and I put this other frame in while I'm here, 200550890712 , has a torch holder, frame only but kind of interesting too, looks like Aerospace tubing.

But back to the saddle, I've never seen it, hope it is okay if I post the pix but the bike is going for a good sum, the saddle well, probably not worth a $100 but all in all, it does not seem to unreasonably priced, looks to be in mint condition. I know Busaste probably looks at most all bikes but I had never known of Viscount branded leather saddles, whether this is just basically a Brooks or what?? I'm not up on my leather saddle details though I have one.

Any discussion welcome as well as on the blue or purple bike frame which would indeed be a good buy.

Very nice on your red Viscount as well Busaste, well done. One of my wheel skewers fell apart, I kept it all, not sure what happened but I kept the parts and put in another skewer.

Hi

Nice Viscount Aeropsace GP.

The leather Viscount branded saddles were made by Middlemores a British firm based in Coventry. In my opinion these saddles were not of the same quality as Brooks being prone to spreading as the miles racked up. Viscount used Middlemores saddles because they were cheaper than Brooks - crucial for the very price driven range of bikes that Viscount made. In 1974, Viscount's first year of production, their top of the range Aerospace Pro model sold in the UK for just £100. An astonishingly low price for a bike you could win pretty high level races on. It certainly had some high up people in Raleigh worried.

The blue frame is off a Viscount Aerospace Sport. The 1970s 'Sport came in red or blue colours. The red one above is mine. My favourite bike. Ever.
