Re: New bike build - which jobs to leave to the experts?

I'll probably be buying factory built wheels, depending on price. BEFORE you do that...do yourself a favour and check out the prices of handbuilt wheel sets from Spa Cycles (the blokes that you have already mentioned) I have had two sets made by Spa Cycles. They were reasonably prices and delivered...

Re: New bike help

I ride dropped bars almost exclusively, my mountain bike being the exception, but for your needs and budget I would be looking at something more utilitarian. Any dropped bar bike at that price will be unlikely to accept wide tyres, which would be highly advisable, and mudguards. When I had to move t...

Re: Cardboard Bike Boxes - More Choice Now

Out of interest what do people do with their bike box between flying out and the return flight?

Re: Holding a Sensible Cadence?

Hi Peter, I ride that route every now and then and find it even harder from Masham because the hills go on and on and there is usually a gale of a headwind. However that has nothing to do with your question. But what I will say is that when the hills get really steep you can't beat low gears. It doe...

Re: Gearing advice sought please.

I would second Brucey's advice re sticking to your wheels and fitting an 8 speed cassette. I would also suggest fitting bar-end levers. I do like STI levers but I'm also a big fan of bar ends. You can buy Shimano Ultegra 8 speed bar ends. https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m2b0s108p1469/SHIMANO-Ultegra-SL-...

Re: V-brakes and drop bar levers

Hi Brucey, Yes the clearance is about 1mm as you see it there but there's not much lever travel before it bites and I do keep my wheels true and well tensionned. The brake is very powerful with lots of modulation. I'm very happy with it. I'll bear in my mid your comments about block wear on long des...

Re: V-brakes and drop bar levers

well the RSX sti and ta with fullsize v brakes work well enough Hi, I don't doubt that your set up works well but have you tried it without the TA? I wonder if some people mistakenly equate a more solid feel at the lever with better brakes in the same way that some mistakenly equate the harsher rid...

Re: V-brakes and drop bar levers

Hi Brucey, Thanks for the education re sti levers of differing generations - I've not read that anywhere with regard to V brakes. Without running out to the garage I can tell you that rim to block clearance is in the order of 2.5mm each side and that the shoes are low down in the slots on the brakes...

V-brakes and drop bar levers

I have recently become the very happy owner of a tandem which I bought second hand. The bike has drop bars and Shimano sti levers, and the front was fitted a std V brake (ie not a mini v). I have read many articles stating that cable pull on drop bar levers is too little for these brakes and that th...

Re: Lower Gearing (Again)

Would like to buy one of these that is for sale little used locally: https://www.evanscycles.com/specialized-dolce-evo-2017-women-s-road-bike-EV244979 Supposedly WSD, but this seems primarily to mean shorter in the top, which suits me fine. Only problem is the 48/32 with 11-34 is too high for me. I...
