Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

It's an interesting issue Brucey, but I honestly believe the now unstoppable march of technology and innovation in most things is what people now expect, and buy into. I was initially against disc brakes on motor cycles when the 1960's japanese invasion was gathering pace. The twin leading shoe fron...

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

Disc brakes will probably come to dominate road cycling, as they already have done so in cars, motor cycles, and mountain bikes. To plead that road cycles are a special case is to ignore the march of technology. I bought the new Roubaix for a reason. I already had the older model (rim braked - 9 spe...

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

Indeed so, Alan O! I can quite believe my father (ex 8th Army Desert Rat) who would probably have used his bayonet to remove a bothersome appendix would have agreed. Though I suspect Mr utility confines his wrath to cyclists who he believes jump on the disc brake Band Wagon. But hey, I can quite for...

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

Quote- 'Because it dumbs things down, there's no skill or ability to concern yourself with.' Yes, that's the age old argument against making life easier, (which implies improving it), for most people. It has ALWAYS been used to prevent change, whether for good, or not so good. Obvious objections in ...

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

I'm getting more depressed by the minute. (Thank you Brucey! ) It would seem that my 'super' bike with its wonderful and joy to use braking performance (and it is that) is just living on borrowed time which may be shorter than I'd imagined. I hadn't realised that Shimano road discs were less ...

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

I take your comments in part. I do all my own work on my machinery, and Shimano are too pessimistic in their insistance of what will not work, or must be renewed. No steel rotors on any of my three current well used and abused (by conditions) and 'getting on a bit' MTB's (old Stumpy with 3x9 gearing...

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

We know that older steel rim brakes could be problematic (though NOT hopeless -or some of us wouldn't still be here) but that was not the point I was making. Disc brakes use STEEL rotors but with special modern pad material which modulates, and works predictably in all conditions. For what reason wo...

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

'What was it that happened?' Cycling became recognised as a worthwhile non basic high tech sport for us energetic go-getters (and band wagon jumpers with lots of spare money, and an image to generate  ), instead of being just a lowly poor mans means of moving about.until they could afford somet...

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?

Since rim brakes have always, in effect, simply been giant disc brakes, why hasn't some manufacturer fitted organic disc brake pads to the standard cable operated calliper, to work on hard wearing steel rims? For all weather commuter type road bikes you'd have super efficient (giant disc) stopping p...

Re: Why put safety/info stickers all over a new bike ?

Come come, this won't do. People must be protected from themselves at all costs. It has long been my belief that the two wheeled bicycle is inherently dangerous and lacking in stability. They should, by law, be fitted with sprung and damped stability outrider wheels, along with strict instructions t...

Everyone has got to be Somewhere.

Heat is supposed to stupify, but I don't find it so when riding. The mind takes on a life of its own. I avoid falling into the trap of counting pedal strokes, (lost to reason if you fall for that one), so I wait for it to latch onto something. A couple of days ago I'd ridden past a field with a larg...

Re: Grease is the word; a complicated word...

Hmmm! Perhaps pinching a chunk off my mothers National Margarine block (fortified, as it was with essential vitamins) to repack my pedal bearings when I 'were' a mere lad, wasn't such a good idea after all. (But who knows? )

Many thanks Brucey. Fascinating reading, and yes, indeed helpful!

Re: Brake position?

To 'go on a bit.' Noting the level of skill on show by the young nowadays, in all sports, is mind blowing! Whether that is to the good is debatable. They are now under peer pressure to perform to clearly dangerous levels in such as mountain biking and B.M.X. etc. A broken body from 'rad to gnar' rid...

Re: Brake position?

12 m.p.h. was obviously just a guesstimate based on how fast I imagined I was going. (Felt like ordinary running sort of speed.) The fact is, with constant practice, we had it to a fine art, and there was no problem in locking the front wheel and stopping very suddenly at that kind of speed, with a ...

Re: Brake position?

Thank you Brucey, that explains where the power came from. (By design, I presume.) Also, our bikes then were ordinary strongly built but heavy(ish) tourers with flat bars which were much easier to control. We used them much as these so called gravel bikes are intended for (Nothing new, is there?) an...
