Re: Signs of old age

I'm 58. I've just bought a new bike after last one came to the end of its natural life after 25 years. If the new one lasts as long I'll still be cycling when I'm 83. I won't care how fast I'm going, I'll just be pleased to remain active

Re: Anyone cycled the Welsh coast?

mnichols wrote:I did a Lap of Wales as training for a longer ride about 3 years ago

I lived near Bristol at the time, cycled across the Severn Bridge, I cut inland across Brecon as I couldn't find a nice route through Newport and Cardiff then down to the coast. Around Pembrokeshire, up the coast to Anglesea. Along a little bit, but instead of going to Liverpool I cut diagonally through Snowdonia and then through Mid Wales, Shropshire, Forest of Dean and Monmouthshire

I've got route files, but on hols at the moment, so on my phone rather than PC

My son did a similar route a year or so ago. We live in Cardiff so he started and finished here. He by passed the Gower and Llyn penninsulars and gut across Pembrokeshire from Pembroke towards Aberystwyth

At least all the five wolves are male so they cannae have kids :?

I fear the bears and wolves shall kill each other, just like back then

The fence might not be strong enough but that is highly unlikely. I think you'll find it was humans who killed the bears and wolves, causing them to become extinct in the UK

mercalia wrote:seems like you will have to be careful where you wild camp in the forest of Dean as Bristol Zoological Society’s Wild Place Project has some of them there. It seems this is part of a debate on rewilding. some more nutcases at work? I dont think I want bears and wolves running around our country side so a stupid idea, serves no purpose than as an "attraction". They had their time and good riddance. if I wanted to risk being attacked by a wild animal I would go an live in the out back of the USA or Australia and other countries. The good thing about this country is that we are at the top of the food chain?

seems like Dr Christoph Schwitzer believes there is also a good argument for reintroducing larger creatures such as lynx to remote areas such as the Scottish highlands. “That may be worth trying. A population of 300 or 400 lynx might be viable,” he said.

I think he has watched Jurassic Park too many times

Are you exaggerating for effect or just ignoring a lot of what the article says?

mercalia wrote:seems like you will have to be careful where you wild camp in the forest of Dean

No you won't, they are in an enclosure.

mercalia wrote: I dont think I want bears and wolves running around our country side so a stupid idea

No one is proposing that bears and wolves will be "running around our countryside" and anyway, an idea is not stupid just because you don't want it.

Re: My New Bike
Anyway, who cares. Where are you off to, what are your touring plans?
I'm going to start off with some day rides in the area where I live in South Wales. I've got a copy of Lost Lanes Wales http://lostlanes.thebikeshow.net/ This has lots of good rides in it. I then want to move on to something like Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury, Lon Cambria https://cycle.travel/route/lon_cambria or Abergavenny to Llandeilo https://cycle.travel/route/cycle_across_the_beacons before I work up to something like Lon Las Cymru https://cycle.travel/route/lon_las_cymru and then who knows. I quite like the idea of getting a ferry to Roscoff or St Malo, doing some cycling and returning from Cherbourg or Caen.
I don't want to get too ambitious too quickly. I am expecting this bike to last for years, so there is plenty of time to build up to some real adeventures

I hope you enjoy many thousands of happy miles on it :D

Thank you. I did a short ten mile ride after collecting it yesterday and have just returned from a 50 mile ride with my son. I enjoyed every minute of it, even the hills! It's the longest ride I have done for many years.

I had a raven that is the same frame but with rohloff gearing. If you want a rugged tourer that just plods on you couldn't have picked a better bike.

Yes, it's a Sherpa. I'm really looking forward to doing some longer rides and camping trips. My wife is saying she'll never see me again
