You are right-taking out insurance is a form of saving.I have never had a bike stolen over 40 years and have probably saved several thousands-certainly enough to make bike ownership effectively free.With insurance the low risk (careful) subsidise the higher risk(careless)

With days being short you can excuse short rides withiut guilt.Secondly the light changes by the minute giving many different moods.There seems to be fewer battery cyclists in the cold.

If you leave the bike outside
1.likely to be stolen
2.even more likely to be damaged
3.could escape either 1 or 2 but very unlikely.
Sell your bike and buy a cheap substitute and dont waste a penny on insurance.

Use a cheap bike to deter theft and rig up a pir type light that comes on if bike is encroached.
