Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Singularly missing the fact that the remainers aren't arguing, they know what they want. It's the Brexitiers who can't agree on hard/soft/slightly gooey/whatever.

Re: Has Mrs May been a good PM?

Actually it was more like 'having voted for Rexit no one could agree what Rexit actually meant' - sound familiar (I'm sure there was a pamphlet that it said "350 Guineas for Ye Olde Apothecary shop on the side of the carriage"). And then we decided to go back to what we had previously had.

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Come on Mike, you said "future" three times, without saying anything about how, what or why. So we have "no change" (according to you) versus what?

There are some good things about living in Switzerland - tobelerone, clocks, low taxes - but you'll have to agree that the flag's a big plus.

Re: How would you make up for shortfalls in engineers, doctors etc?

Does it matter where they come from as long as they do a good job?

No. But if any of the following apply; born here, educated here, trained here, feel valued and respected here, etc. - then the odds of their staying, starting companies, attracting companies, etc. will be a lot higher.

The UK can't compete at the 'throw cheap labour at it' end of manufacturing - it has to be in other areas; original design, new ideas, specialist products and technologies, etc., ie. the original engineering stages - even if it then gets manufactured somewhere else.

Re: How would you make up for shortfalls in engineers, doctors etc?

Stop everyone who does just anything calling themselves an "Engineer" (yes, that's you car mechanics, bin men, etc). It varies around the world but even the Americans protect by law the term "Professional Engineer" and in some states "Engineer".

My official job title is "Information Engineer", and I refuse to use it, I'm a "Technical Author" (though oddly I have a degree in the former and not the latter).

Re: Please suggest a good 1-person tent

I recently got a new tent and it was correctly listed as "Unisex". Though I think that probably had more to do with the supplier's database needing to list every item as "Male", "Female" or "Unisex".

But I think it may have gone wrong I what I wanted, a 'Vaude Hogan XT', was listed as a "Vaude Adult Unisex Green" which probably doesn't help with sales. Fortunately I recognised from the photos that it was the tent I wanted.

Re: OS and other maps-deliberate mistakes?

I've always nursed a hope that our security services are actually good at their job, and the MI6 building in Lambeth will one day be discovered to just contain government storerooms for biscuits and loo rolls.

I did order some OS custom maps last month for the other halves birthday, centred on their house, and it was impressively up to date with things that have only appeared in the last couple of years.

Re: OS and other maps-deliberate mistakes?

Back in the 70's the Russian army had the best maps of the UK that you could get. They didn't waste time on spy satellites and the like, they just bought a full set of OS maps and copied them. But first they wrote on them what things really actually were. So the industrial estate south of Reading was correctly listed as the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment. All made slightly pointless now we're in an age were the likes of AWE has a website.

Slightly different from deliberate mistakes is the need to change thing to keep people happy. Google deliberately alter their online maps based on where they think your browsing from. Basically to try and keep themselves out of the endless arguments on disputed territories and place names: https://www.jebruner.com/2016/06/geopol ... a-service/

My own recent bugbear has been with the Irish Ordnance Survey and the presence on their maps of ferry services that don't exist. It seems you can' get a boat from the Ring of Kerry to Dingle, but its there on paper. Grrr.

Re: Halfords to sell Bromptons

Its hard to gauge things, but if you look at Brompton's 2016-2017 financials, ie. post move:

Bikes 44K
Revenue £32M
Profit £2.5M

That's roughly £50 profit a bike or 8%'ish. That's actually not much for manufactured goods and it wouldn't take much to turn things bad. That must have been a big part of the need to move the factory to somewhere where they could implement better flow and efficiency. But big thumbs up for staying loyal to London, and it does represent a market of a ridiculous number of commuters arriving every weekday.

That said, partnering with a large corporate who will probably collect and distribute stock would be a tempting opportunity even if it means sharing margin. Lets hope it works for them rather than harms them.

No, Westminster didn't impose a budget - that would be 'direct rule' and a major trigger for trouble from all the players of old. But the minister did manage to word a "here's a suggested budget, if you want to change it please please reassemble the assembly" release which the includes £410 million.

Psamathe wrote:If the DUP do "pull-the-plug" and withdraw their propping-up Ms May over Brexit as they are now threatening, do we get our £bn bribe UK taxpayers forked-out back. Are bribes refundable? or would the DUP just take the money and then renege?

Strangely enough the DUP can hold up their hands and say "What money, we never got any money, never saw any money" on this one as it was added to the Northern Ireland Assembly's budget but the assembly was already dissolved and still is so the big carrier bag of cash is probably sitting under some civil servant's desk.

Now if Bojo had the guts to see things through, he'd be thinking, nice down payment on the footing for the Boris Bridge when I get in.

Kindle on a mobile is only for when you've forgotten your Kindle. Otherwise its just a waste of battery.

"I have the one with ads, and don't find it obtrusive. I'm quite good at ignoring ads (I think)." - Agree, you only see the ad for the brief second between switching on and swiping up. Don't tell the advertisers but they're pretty useless (those I've noticed the advertiser is Amazon anyway).

16.1 - "to elect at least nine persons as Elected Trustees from amongst their number" - which I take to mean that candidates must be members.
19,1 - "A Trustee shall cease to hold office if he or she:- (a) ceases to be a Member"
