Emwmarine wrote: 31 Oct 2024, 8:41am Not too off road. Although when following the eurovelo route along the french coast last year that had i guess 40 percent what you would loosely call gravel.
I've got a steel road bike with handbuilt 32 spoke wheels and 32mm gatorskins. It's fine on paths but would struggle properly off road. My wife uses her gravel bike but with more roadish tyres for touring.

I think the thing to do would be to go short notice if the weather for a few days didn't look too icey.
There are some nice semi-slick gravel tyres that significantly increase grip with a penalty of a small speed decrease.

Most of the Netherlands can be traversed on herringbone pattern brick cycle paths and the routes are used as the main transport network all year round, so are well maintained. On a high pressure day with little wind, it would be bliss.

Not sure some of the Asian countries you'd need to traverse are any better.

Bosch cycle batteries seem to be about 500Wh and according to the spec sheet take around 5 hours to charge on a 4A charger. The large 30W solar panels can provide about 1.6A (which requires full midday summer sunlight and perfect orientation) - so you'll be lucky to get 1A average. So you're looking at 20 hours per charge.

Re: EV1 and EV3, Campsites in Spain

The Camino routes are a huge trade, the accomodation is usually very cheap hostels called Albergues.

I don't think there's much camping available.

Re: Spain to Kenya

You mean by not taking a ferry across the Mediterranean?

So along the Southern Europe coast to the Bosphorus, cross in to Asia then cycle to the Egyptian border and in to Africa?

You'd need to cross Syria, Lebanon, Israel and the Gaza strip, or Iraq, Jordan and Israel or Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel. Then if you head south from Egypt, there's an civil war in Sudan to avoid.

History, large numbers in Germany only use cash, don't use apps like WhatsApp and vote for anti-surveillance politicians. Makes it quick to shop as the automatic checkouts are always free, but means you have to use Signal and Street view is non-existant.

You can be asked for proof of funds and proof of medical insurance.

Re: Ferry prices

The Newcastle Amsterdam ferry uses dynamic pricing, I've seen it at anything from 100 to 450.

The Newcastle terminal isn't in Newcastle, it's in North Tyneside. Pretty sure there's a large parking area you can book, if not there's a yacht marina with parking further down the road.

The IJmuiden end is good for cycling, nice ride to Haarlem for lunch. The stamping and customs can be a bit variable - either straight through or checking everything. To speed it up, have all the paperwork you may be asked for to hand, passport, insurance, bank app etc.

Re: Cycle Travel Question

Rob D wrote: 26 Oct 2024, 7:50pm We have what seems to be a difficulty with CT's routing, SE of Skopje. We use 'paved only' but yesterday, heading east from Tetovo, we had nearly 3 k of really rough tracks, including 100 m of mud and water about 3" deep. It was certainly not paved, and was 5 kph stuff, on the flat, shook us to bits. V relieved to get to tarmac.

Our proposed route tomorrow south/south-east from Skopje includes 'roads' which aren't shown at all on GM, and in places on GM aerials, are as good as non-existent. Maybe rough agricultural tracks? I'm marking the proposed route on GM, but really struggle in places to see where on earth it will go. However, I've just seen it's shown as a track (in one area) on OutdoorActive maps.

Looking at the aerials, I'm trying to work out if we dare chance it, or whether it's safer to abandon that idea and stick to bigger roads?

Has anyone else had such problems - and can suggest a suitable approach?
If you look on Open Street Map, what is the surface type marked as?

If it's wrong, add a change request and presumably it will filter through to Cycle.travel

Tour de France TV rights

European Broadcasting Union and Amaury Sporting Organisation have sorted the rights for:

Men’s: Tour de France, La Vuelta, Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, La Flèche Wallonne, Paris-Nice, Criterium du Dauphiné , Cyclassics Hamburg, Eschborn Frankfurt, Clasica San Sebastian, Paris-Tours, Tro Bro Leon, and Volta Catalunya.

Women’s : Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, La Vuelta Femenina by Carrefour.es, Paris-Roubaix Femmes avec Zwift, Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes and La Flèche Wallonne Femmes.

It's being shown by 13 EBU members, it doesn't look like EBU member ITV have taken an option for the UK but Warner Bros have sublicensed for other European territories.

Re: Caen to Les Sables D'Olonne

I'm planning to ride south from Les Sables (but as a sailor, would like to see the place too)

La Rochelle seemed to require a train to Paris and a train back when I looked.

Caen to Les Sables D'Olonne

Hi

I'm planning a short ride with friends in Normandy and am thinking that I could extend it and head south. Due to time constraints, I need to grab a train to somewhere on La Velodysee.

I seem to be able to get a combination of trains (all TER, TER and InOUI, TER and TGV) - does anyone know how to check if cycles can be carreid on these trains?

Re: Suggest my 6 week continental tour 2025

beeb wrote: 23 Oct 2024, 8:43am Looking for ideas for my 6 week continental tour 2025.

My usual plan is to get the dfds ferry from Newcastle to I j maiden, which I plan on doing again.

We then thought we might get the eurosleeper train to Prague and start out tour there.

We thought we might take a route from Prague to Budapest then follow the Danube to its source at Donaushingen.

What we want is suggestions for Prague to Budapest, then Donauschingen to Amsterdam, don’t mind taking a train back to Amsterdam if it’s easy!

We like to travel between 50 and 80 km per day and camp.

Looking forward to hearing suggestions, thanks in advance

If you ride to Donauschingen, there's a fairly flat route from there to the Rhine opposite Strasbourg (370m climbing over 110km). Mainly on paved cycle paths. Cycle.Travel witll find it if you ask for Donauschingen to Kehl. There seems to be some Pensions, Gästehause, and Jugendherberge on the route. The Schwarzwald is a nice visit.

Then you can ride up the Rhine Gorge to either Köln, Arnhem or Den Haag and get the train back to Haarlem, then a 40 mins ride to the ferry. Don't miss Baden-Baden, Wiesbaden and Köln on the way up. I highliy recommend a stop at Bacharach and the Jugendherberge - it's a castle overlooking the Rhine - stunning views, lovely walks, cheap and easy to find. https://hihostels.com/hostels/bacharach/. If you can't make it up the hill, the local taxi firm will deliver you and bike to the top for a few euros.

The Rhine Gorge is beautiful and turning the corner as the Hohenzollernbrucke comes in to view is a great experience.

The main issue is that National Rail sold off the departure board to advertisers. There are a handful of tiny screens with actual trains data.

Re: Next Year's Tour??

Cycle to Staines or Feltham, train to Weybridge then train to Portsmouth. If you're getting the ferry, you don't want to go all the way in to Portsmouth.

Feltham is mainly slow speed roads all the way to the station or 10mins in a big Uber.

All those SW railway trains don't require bike bookings (in fact, you can't book) and you can hop on with a bike apart from during peak times.

I've got a small folding titanium firepit from AliExpress and a chopped up grill from my local pound shop.

Nothing beats a campfire and some grilled protein.
