Re: Leh-Manali-Chandigarh

How are you acclimatising to the altitude?
Leh - 18875 Foot
Menali - 13050 foot
Chandigarh - 1066foot

Yes it's downhill on this trip, but most tours go the other way

Re: Bikes on household insurance - cost and benefit comparis

May I suggest that for "What's covered" a mention of whether the policy pays new for old or applies depreciation is in order, possibly also policy excess in the event of theft. Of course the true benefit of any policy will only be established if you find yourself in the unfortunate positi...

Bikes on household insurance - cost and benefit comparison

Hi I realise this may have been done a lot, but finding decent and cheap cover for bikes always end with the words 'Put it on the household' also prices change. Can I suggest a thread comparing companies under 4 headings 1)Company 2)What's covered 3)Cost 4)Date I've just done mine and thought the pr...

Re: To tent or not to tent that is the question

The Cicerone guide isn't great for campsites. However having cycled the middle section last year they are pretty plentiful . one thing you need to watch is that a few have closed in the last few years and asking the locals may not help Mainz - Campsite has a specific area for cyclists, akin to USA h...

Re: American looking for touring partner/s in UK or just adv

To me a route seems to be evolving from here Train to Cardiff Taff trail etc east to the old Severn crossing (Iconic crossing - big suspension bridge - cycle track) South to Bristol Pick up the Sustrans route to Bath Route 42 through the 2 tunnels (a mile long tunnel and a smaller one) to Radstock R...

Re: American looking for touring partner/s in UK or just adv

Differences to the USA 1) We don't have shoulders which many USA roads have so you will be with the traffic. Therefore avoid the red coloured A roads and try to use the yellow coloured minor roads (colours on the map) 2) I've seen one motel in the UK and that was shut. Travelodges are the most simil...

Re: In the market for a Titanium road/touring/audax bike

Buy the frame you really really want and if necessary put cheaper components on it if your budget is set. The logic is that the frame will last forever whilst components wear out, so you can upgrade as time passes. I have an Enigma Etape that takes both a rack and will take mudguards and has a tripl...

Re: When I flew with my bike this is what happened......

United and had a case with BA as well, but accepted when pressed. I have heard of other airlines but that's hearsay. Trying to tie an airline down in advance is very hard as to what they will accept. All will have recommendations but this rarely says polythene bag. In my position taking groups I can...

Re: When I flew with my bike this is what happened......

It is almost entirely random having flown many groups abroad with CTC Holidays for the past 10 years using different airlines and departure points. Regardless of packing there is damage to about 1 in every 20 bikes and in this I mean anything from a scratch to a frame bend. In all cases though the b...

Re: Mercian Cycles

I've had 2 bikes built by Mercian Both bespoke, a tandem and a tourer. In both cases I insisted on gears to climb walls, mainly as i cyclecamp and am trying to look after my knees. in both cases they were very obliging and it was no problem to set the tourer up with 32 on the back 26 on the front. T...

Re: Somerset Tour

How long have you got? How many miles a day? Stourhead is lovely and the road north from here through Kilmington Common is lovely, bear right and drop down over Gare Hill, through Trudoxhill and into Nunny which it's small but very interesting moated castle, through Leigh on Mendip then Oakhill, pas...

GPS Course this W/E

Hi As a CTC leader I've organised a W/E tuition on GPS devices this W/E and have a cancellation, is anyone interested. They look great out of the box, but take a lot of effort and asking others to get started on them and this course will make that a lot easier I asked for 1) An introduction to gps a...
