Re: Tour to Budapest - 3 weeks in July but starting where?

The Danube between Passau and Vienna is heavily concreted without much marsh or woodland. So flat, fast and not much wildlife. But interesting history and Baroquerie. We visited Mauthausen but I wish we hadn't.

Visegrad and Budapest are great.

Re: Roof racks

I'd decide what sort of locking I wanted, study the Halfords website, then take the rack and the car there and ask. But I might miss out the second of those. NB discount for Members of Cycling UK and frequent offers... and you can use both at once.

Re: Alu post stuck in alu frame

I'd try soaking in penetrating fluid and then direct impact from below along these lines:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=105655

And if that didn't work I'd send it to someone with lots of experience and pay them, such as The Seatpost Man:

Of course. That's why I suggested getting the crank length right for size and leg action and not for force. Then you can sort the gearing.

Re: Crank length

You'll need more force on the pedal to get the same effect. Whether that's "harder" for you is difficult to predict.

I suggest getting cranks that suit your size and desired movement regardless of force.

Re: Tyre sizes - will this fit?

No comment on what your frame and mudguards will take, but, as Sheldon Brown puts it:
"29 inch 622 mm This is a marketing term for wide 622 mm ("700C") tires."

Re: Using a Powerbank to charge a Garmin Edge whilst riding

That's good to hear.

I've had (and still have) connection problems with both of my Edge 1000s.

And a quick search of the Web reveals: http://www.google.com/search?q=garmin+usb+data+problem, but of course there's a lot of devices around.

Re: Using a Powerbank to charge a Garmin Edge whilst riding

As above: it should be 100% and I'd play with another pack to help debug this.

Even with a dynamo USB charger I have to run my Edge 1000 that way to avoid it switching in and out of charging mode.

Jonathan

PS: Some Garmin devices are very fussy about USB cables and connections for data transfer. There's lots of that reported on the Web. But USB charging should be fine.

Re: Mudguard mounting LED tail-light with flashing mode?

My non-dynamo rear flashing lamp is a long thin one from Cateye with multiple flashing modes. The bracket is a cut-down Cateye belt clip with an extra hole drilled for a bolt through the mudguard: that gives a locating peg and that bolt. The lamp can then be moved between the seat post and the mudguard.

Yes, it's common to need a tool. If so a hook might be better than a lever.

So was everyone once upon a time.

There are two great advice sites:
Sheldon Brown https://www.sheldonbrown.com
Park Tool https://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help

And just ask here when you get stuck or are in doubt.

If you're going to buy Shimano shoes be aware that the sizing is... unusual. Typically you need something like +1 or +2 Continental European sizes larger than usual.
