Re: Is kinetic energy via cycling a practical idea to be able to recharge a 12v battery?

biker38109 wrote: 17 Nov 2024, 2:56pm...I have been running the numbers and I use around 20a/240w per day. Solar from 300w of panels reading for this month so far is 76a/910w / 17 days so far = 4.4w/53 per day.
...
Are the following correct?

The solar panels are 300 W nominal.

The rest of the system is running at 12 V.

For the last 17 days you have a reading of the solar power generation. Is that 76 A or 76 A hours? And is that an average over all of that time, day and night? And is that what the solar panels say, or what (!) the 12 V system says?

...

As upthread: do you have a target for what you'd like to be able to generate?

I do understand wheels. I go to Spa Cycles, ask for a rim (Exal LX) I’d seen on their website and walk out with another (Sputnik - their recommendation).

English Language

From another thread:
I’ve long spelled things as I’ve pronounced (prenounced) them and hence didn’t do wonderfully at sckool.
The first vowel sound in pronounced isn't either a short e or a long e. It's a schwa.

simonineaston wrote: 16 Nov 2024, 9:55am The trope that cyclists don't "pay their way" and that they should be "taxed like all other road users" has been with us for yonks and, as we most of us know, has been picked up by the motor vehicle pressure group and used across sm with much gusto.
What is your favourite rejoinder, the pithy one liner, that you find most effective, dear reader? Or does the argument require careful explanation, nuance & subtlety?
It totally depends on the setting and the aim of the discussion.

But I wouldn't start by assuming that the other party is the victim of a "pressure group". Stereotyping the other way round is a major part of the problem.

Re: The press and incitement

The PCC was replaced by IPSO. I think that the Telegraph did sign up to IPSO, but I'm not sure about the online version:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Press_Com ... Commission
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independe ... ganisation
https://www.ipso.co.uk/making-a-complai ... regulates/

I'd certainly recommend working through a group rather than individually.

And in England the legal aspects of hate crime to hatred depend greatly on whether you have a "protected characteristic" or not. Cyclists don't. There's a recent Law Commission report on extension:
"Hate crime";
https://lawcom.gov.uk/project/hate-crime/

It is, and in this forum the Original Poster can change it in the Subject of the Original Post. And other posters in their own posts.

Are such mounts available to buy separately from lamps? That would be handy to allow me to swap the lamp between my main rides.
Is that this sort of mount at the lamp end? (I use these Jtek mounts with our B+M dynamo headlamps.)

Re: Where could the creaking be coming from?

Yes, you'll find many similar experiences in the archives. And the general advice is to consider that it could be coming from anywhere, despite first impressions.

Does it seem to occur in time with pedalling?

Can you reproduce it with the bike on a stand?

One final point. Wasn't there advice to the cabinet by a top civil servant saying that they should not get involved in the public debate by giving their comments or POV? I find that a bit problematic. Legal or systemic advice is good but if it was basically an instruction to an elected minister then I feel the advisory role of civil service is a little over stepped. I also wonder if he was influenced by the PM who is publically quoted as supporting this bill. Ok for him but not for others in his government?
...
The Cabinet Secretary's letter:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... -ministers

This was constitutionally appropriate and a sensible reminder.

Streeting shouldn't have made the comment about costs having to come from other NHS activities.

PS: Of course this would all be less of a problem if so many Ministers weren't MPs.

As upthread: is it genuine?

Self-driving cars

...
Further to this, the AV does appear to be a solution that very few people have actually asked for. It's never even featured in an election manifesto, no votes have actually been taken to gauge public opinion or concern... but yet here it is, with the threat of ending jobs for taxi drivers.
...
There have been many surveys of public opinion.

And the constitutional process in the UK has included a report by the Law Commission, two inquiries by Parliamentary Committees, and a Bill that has gone through Parliament.

Bmblbzzz wrote: 14 Nov 2024, 4:17pm Most of us aren't lawyers with a huge amount of time on our hands. Could you provide a summary of the relevant effects of this legislation for the layman?
I followed it up to the Law Commission report (because I had no idea how they would allocate responsibilities):
https://lawcom.gov.uk/project/automated-vehicles/

The Act and the government commentary:
https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2024/10/contents
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/self ... ecomes-law

The IET coverage:
https://eandt.theiet.org/2024/05/21/sel ... omes-force

I'd emphasise the following:

1 There is now a law and a framework for responsibilities and a load of definitions.

2 How those responsibilities have been allocated for the two operating models “user-in-charge” and “no-user-in-charge".

3 The key standard: "a level of safety at least as high as careful and competent human drivers".

4 The greater certainty that this gives developers, investors, insurers, owners etc.
