Re: Octalink advice

Octalink is pretty much obsolete now having been superseded by external cupped BBs with two piece chainsets. A conventional crank tool will remove your cranks but you will need one with the little cap on to stop it wedging in the bigger bolt hole. There are two standards of Octalink the splines on t...

Re: Modern Buisy Life Style?

It's the 21st C version of "The dog ate my homework". The idea that what with us doing 18hr shifts down the kipper mines we are busier than we were 30 years ago is tosh. That people are incapable of managing their time, delegating or just saying no and consider an all day shopping trip to ...

Re: sprockets for screw on freewheel/ cassette sprockets

For the screw on freewheels, unless someone has some new old stock you're pretty much stuffed. The freewheels are fast entering Hens Teeth country much less spare sprockets. For cassettes, Miche do a build your own cassette kit for dealers but they took so long to arrive and there was so little call...

Re: Care of Brooks saddles

That's what it's for showerproof really. Never Proofide a wet saddle. From the Brooks website, "A new saddle should be treated with Brooks Proofide leather dressing to help assist the ‘breaking-in’ process. Proofide keeps the leather supple as it is specially formulated from natural ingredients...

Re: Commuter upgrades - mini vee brakes and tyres

I'd go down to 25s but use something with less weight and rolling resistance than the Marathons, good as they are. I have a rural commute and use Conti Gatorskins all year round. Some people say they have rubbish puncture protection but in my practical experience the majority have ridden these tyres...

Re: Replace chain rings or new chain set?

generally speaking what sort of tolerances in 'straightness' / 'flatness' do people find with chainrings? every summer when the lightweight bike comes out to play (i say 'every' but...) i remember that the campagnolo 53T ring it runs has a drift of 2-3 mm to the right as it revolves. is this common...
