its the rear derailleur cable that is eroded and looks like it is touching top of fork.

Yes, I know. It would have to be worded quite carefully. A small numer of hours per week, an hourly rate that is quite low. But it could be extended to certain higher paid jobs with a labour shortage, such as consultants and GPs. Worth considering, at least.

The problem is this would put pressure on the wages of low skill jobs, why pay a "working age" person a living wage when you can pay a pensioner pennies supplemented by the taxpayer.

Re: Starmer talking about immigration policy
Weird how market forces only appear to affect wages in one direction.
Plentiful "cheap labour" from abroad drives down wages apparently.
However there's a labour shortage, yet whole industries are having to strike to get something near to inflation matching wage raises.
Makes you think the issue may not be the "cheap labour" after all.

Re: EV owners to pay Tax.....
Makes me smile to see the "no such thing as road tax" come up again.
The way i see it ,is if VED is commonly referred to as "road tax" it does exist. Its still not a sensible argument against cyclists and an official titled road tax hasn't existed since Winston Churchill, but its common usage in the English language, everyone knows what you're talking about, so you're not wrong to call it that. And when they inevitably call the new tax that includes EVs a road tax, you haven't instantly lost your main argument that it doesn't exist.
It just seems like saying that there is no such thing as Bob, or Bill, only Robert and William. If everyone calls him Bob - he is Bob!
I'm sure if you referred to it as VED in everyday conversation, people will think you need to go to a clinic.
I once got "told off" in a forum for calling a cars side mirrors "wing mirrors". Sure, the current attachment point on the car doesn't match the etymology of the term, but

Re: Cycling safety cams
I suspect a visible camera may improve your safety by making some drivers think twice about close passes etc. If this is the case, the most cost effective solution would be to buy a hi viz vest that says "filming in progress" or similar, and cover an empty toilet roll in black tape and stick it to your helmet!tim-b wrote: ↑9 Nov 2022, 5:55am A camera won't increase your immediate safety and they're not particularly useful in the dark at your (and my) budget
I've submitted a couple of clips for consideration of prosecution. Neither case was considered bad enough and so won't improve future safety either
I use one and I now regard it as a record for use in a future claim

Re: Who checks their bike before a ride?
my go to bike has a couple of foibles that mean i check it more than i would otherwise.
Its an alfine hub gear and the bolts on the rear wheel have a habit of coming loose over time so they get a check and nip with a spanner occasionally before a big ride. Also the crank bolts have previously come loose so i'll have a go at them at the same time.

How would you deal with a slim child who had bad fitness? Just treat this kid the same.
Us fat people know we're fat. a cycling proficiency teacher telling us to lose weight won't help, probably the reverse. Fat people can enjoy cycling too.

Re: E10 Petrol
i have an old mk 2 VW Polo, that is a bit of a project car and i don't do many miles in - so a tank of fuel will last a few months.
After a few months of being filled with E10 i did notice a leak in one of the old fuel hoses ( although may not be connected - did seem a coincidence). I have now updated all the rubber fuel hoses to the latest R9 standard ones and will fill it with premium/E5 if possible in the future .

lower case m is the unit meters, so it obviously means men kill someone for every 10m they travel. Bl00dy men, eh!

Re: Can ignorance and intelligence coexist in the same person?
I assume he's intelligent enough to know exactly what he's saying, just doesn't have any empathy because the options are:
1) Pay low earning people more money, either by legislation (min wage increase), taxation or benefits. He don't want to do that because Tory - he and his ilk might have to pay a bit more tax or take a bit less profit when he returns to the board of EvilCorp- boo.
2) Let low earning people struggle on as they are or worse, because he don't care - doesn't affect him, just those "lazy" poor people. But he can't say that, so has to bat it back with some gumpf about personal responsibility.

Not really relevant but i am psychologically unable to wear white socks due to the fact that when i was a kid, if you went to school in white socks you got relentlessly teased for wearing "Barry Whites". In hindsight it doesn't seem to make sense on any level!

Ride with an eyepatch on, so when you enter the tunnel you flip it up and have one eye already adapted to darkness.

Also seems a bit far on a scooter for me. I'd go folding bike, or buy a couple of cheap second hand bikes and keep one locked up either end.

Maybe not what you were thinking but these are battery free and have flash function. Powered by a magnet on your spokes.
(I have no experience of using them myself)

Re: GPS device for real time navigation
I have a first generation Hammerhead and that has a nice big screen and good clear mapping. I believe the current 2nd generation is similar but slightly smaller. It is the best i have seen for displaying map/routes on a cycling specific device. And it often recieves updates with improved features as they are developed. However the battery life isn't brilliant. It suits me for rides of no more than a few hours but if i was doing longer days in the saddle, for peace of mind, I might be better off with the equivalent Garmin which i understand is a lot better for battery life. It will run with a battery pack attached though - which i may do as the battery life gets worse over the coming years unless tempted by a good offer on some new tech.
I don't think i would play full price for a hammerhead though (i am too tight!) - i got mine at a significant discount on a black friday offer a couple of years back.
