Re: Law on modifying bikes

Legally that would be a motorbike, and have all the associated requirements.

Re: Alfine 11 tensioner issue

My alfine 11 bike has an eccentric bottom bracket for chain tensioning, but the frame does have a specific BB shell to take it.

looks like there are solutions for standard frames such as below (although i have no experience of these myself)

Re: The "Royals" Thread

I saw this Tony Benn quote recently, it seems quite topical. Wonder what answers would be given if it was posed to HRH Chucky III?

"If one meets a powerful person....... ask them five questions: “What power have you got? Where did you get it from? In whose interests do you exercise it? To whom are you accountable? And how can we get rid of you?”

Re: Queen Victoria Postboxes

I wonder how long it will be before we have our first spot of a Charles III post box.

I assume new postboxes still get installed occasionally on new estates and the like .

Re: Why do people hate Cyclists?

The only time i have received unsolicited verbal (and/or hand gestures) is when i'm on my bike, and it happens on a reasonably regular basis

Last week i was informed by some men in a van that i was a w@nker. They were held up for several seconds because a considerate but slightly timid driver took her time overtaking me due to oncoming traffic.

Sticks and stones i suppose, but at the end of a hard day at work, cycling home, it just made me feel horrible. Not angry - just depressed.

Re: Is 1.5m space required even if passing a cyclist who is in a cycle lane.

Yes.

Unfortunatley, painted cycle lanes (especially the skinny ones we often get) promote close passes - so quite often make it more dangerous for cyclists.

Re: Where has "Touring" in saddle descriptions gone?

i have just looked up my current preferred saddle the Selle S5 superflow, on Selle's website.
On it's "datasheet" it classifies it as a sport touring saddle, but as they don't have that as a category heading on their website, it now appears in the "Commuting" section.

Re: BMX not road legal

Pedal reflectors are a legal requirement if riding at night according to the highway code:

Rule 60
At night your cycle MUST have white front and red rear lights lit. It MUST also be fitted with a red rear reflector (and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured after 1/10/85).

Re: South Derbyshire road trail

If you are using Komoot to plan you can select "road cycling" as a sport and that should not take you on any off road routes. If you have "bike touring" selected that will include off road routes.

That said as mentioned above the cloud trail is perfectly passable by road bike. (there is a short canal section that can get a bit muddy in the winter.
The north end is in the city of derby so is less scenic but south of Swarkestone is nice, worth diverting off going through Melbourne, Staunton Harald reservoir, and up to Calke abbey. There are cycle trails around Calke Abbey which are beautuful but might be a bit rough on road bikes in places (the Tram trail) but you can ride through/around by bike and stop off for a National trust cake and cuppa.

NATURAL ANKLING wrote: 29 Jul 2022, 3:15pm That looks like renew a photo driving license, update or renew every 10 years et cetera et cetera, I have a paper driving license?
You will be able to get your first photo card application verified through the post office too. Form D1 I believe, if you had to replace your licence because you lost it or were updating your address you'd have to apply for a photocard in the same way, as they don't issue paper one s anymore.

Worth mentioning that you will need photo ID to vote in the future because the Tories want to either stop non existent voter fraud, or stop poor people voting labour. Although if you have a postal vote or don't vote this won't be an issue.

Re: Converting derailleur to hub gear other than Rohloff

i've got a cytronex conversion on an brompton 6 speed - which has sturmey archer hub gears. Works fine, mine is slightly higher geared than standard which is nice - as i have a bit of assistance up hills so doesn't need to be too low but i have more of an option to give it some beans above the assistance speed if i am so motivated.

Re: Car Hire Without Photo Id?

If that is too much of a faff, you can get you photo taken and identity confirmed whilst applying to renew your licence at some post offices for a small additional fee:

Re: Temp traffic lights timings

AndyK wrote: 26 Jul 2022, 12:40pm Seriously, if this happens to you, report it to the local highway authority. There will be a form for it on their website. They'll have a word with the contractor and there's a fair chance the timings will be changed. There's even a small chance the contractor will remember getting a rollicking and will get the settings right on the next job.
Must admit, i couldn't be bothered to do in this instance. It looks like they'd be gone in a day or so, and couldn't be bothered to spend the time chasing up. (i obviously have more than enough time to grumble about it here though).
Have reported traffic lights to the authorities a couple of times. Once reported a traffic lights at a crossroad in town that completely missed out a cycle-lane only road on its cycle. So you'd sit at the lights forever - or through a couple of cycles until you realised and jumped the red light (bl**dy cyclists). The council got back to me super-quick and were very apologetic, and rectified it the next day.
The other time was on poor timings on lights on a narrow bridge. Never got a response and don't know if they did anything as i don't travel that way very often, and was only an issue if there was no traffic detected behind you. But would have been nice to have an acknowledgement even if it was just to say they'd review it and ended up doing nowt.

This looks like a very cost effective solution if it works for you- although is basically the aforementioned strapping a drysac to your bars.
