simonhill wrote: 24 Jan 2022, 9:03pm On giving way on a shared path, I'm usually ringing my bell because they are walking 3 or 4 abreast often with a dog as well.

It is a shared path, so I think we should share sensibly. All I need is a narrow slot, enough to get safely by.

I normally get greeted well if I approach carefully and am often thanked, which leads me to think that not all passing cyclists are so careful
i think this is more the situation i was thinking. I think of it as pedestrians are giving way to me, as they have to take action to allow me to pass, but only because they are taking up the whole path, walking down the centre, having their dog off a lead etc. Maybe i should think of it as that they taking action to share the path.

i do approach carefully especially if there are dogs or little children who could dart out, and am often thanked. Although on some of the shared trails i ride on there is the habit of people jumping out of their skin when i cycle slowly up behind them and ask politely if i can pass, after a preliminary tinkle on approach. "i thought i heard a bell" is the usual statement.

Re: Cyclist-hater refuses to move and says its illegal to cycle on this path??? (PICS INSIDE)

Has made me think. The new highway code clarifies that cyclists should give way to pedestrians on shared use paths. At the minute I would say pedestrians usually give way to me when paths aren't that wide, in that I tinkle my bell on approach, they stand to the side, hopefully with any canine colleagues under control, I breeze past and give (and usually, receive) verbal thanks/greetings. Should I be stopping and letting them walk past me?

Re: Anyone Using Carradice Bar Bag??

i have a camouflage version of the carradice bar bag. I like it as is big enough for most of my general cycling needs (tools, jacket, snacks etc)

i found it a bit saggy and it interfered with my dynamo light i have mounted on my fork crown, so i made a supporting rack by bending a length of 6mm dia stainless steel rod, which holds it up. Had to wrap a bit of tape and old inner tube round it to stop it rattling

Re: COVID Lockdown - Guidance versus the Law

I cycled to Foremark reservoir where those ladies were fined this morning. It's on my usual weekend route and I like to ride the climb on the road onto the site. No sign of the police then but they seem to have scared away the visitors. There's usually a few dog walkers around at that time at least, but there was just one car in the car park.

Re: Brompton, Airnimal, crosshead, etc - what's the pros and cons

Might be worth nothing that Bromptons tend to hold their value quite well, so if you did get one and it didn't work out - you'd be able to recoup a big chunk of the cost by putting it on ebay. Same might be true for other folders but is outside my bubble of knowledge.

Re: BIke purchase and Refund : Can I change my mind?

if you buy online its maybe more straightforward as you are covered by distance selling regulations for a short period of time - although the retailer may make you pay for postage if the item is not faulty

Don't need a fancy GPS, what's wrong with just running round with a trundle wheel?

Why do you want a pump to fit on a Brompton?
What do you need a pump for?

Not used a pump on my bikes for years.
I top up the tyres with a track pump at home, and I've not had a puncture since September 2015 on Mercian and May 2017 on Moulton ............ but that was a blowout on a steep hill when the front rim overheated. Since fixed by fitting decent brakes.

I take spare tubes and CO2 cylinders. All fits in a pocket with tyre levers too.
Pumps?
Pointless in my experience unless a track pump at home.

I don't want to have to have pockets full of tools when I jump on my Brompton to go into town or wherever. Pump, tube and tools all stowed in/on the frame, ready and waiting. No need to wear a jersey with big pockets, or chance of forgetting anything. Don't get punctures very often but when I have, has come in useful. Also got a pump mounted on my big boy bike for when I go long leisure rides for similar reasons.
