Re: BBC - beginning to despair

Nearholmer wrote: 8 Jan 2025, 10:07am Focus on the important question: does the BBC deliberately lie and deliberately distort its news coverage to further a particular political agenda?
There are numerous studies showing that BBC coverage during the Corbyn years was biased against him and his Labour Party.
Things that stick in my memory include , a graphic showing Corbyn in a Cossack hat in front of the Kremlin, mistakenly showing the wrong years footage of Boris Johnson to cover up when he happened to be hung over and stuffed up laying a wreath at the cenotaph, so that he looked more professional before the election, and Angela Raynor being asked if they wanted to "nationalise sausages" on question time.

They didn't seem to bothered when Keir Starmer called for Hamas to release the sausages though.

Having your bike stolen is less likely than it used to be because of unleaded petrol.

(Well if you believe this theory anyway https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead%E2%8 ... hypothesis )

To be honest, i find once you have ridden it for a while your brain will filter it out and you won't really hear it.

Also useful for alerting pedestrians of your presence on shared use paths.

Cycling UK is based in Surrey. Does it actually claim to be representing the interests of cyclists? If so, how has it manifestly failed to ensure its own County Council Highways Authority fulfilled its legal responsibilities to ensure the safety of all road users? I’d say that not only has the Highways Authority taken money under false pretences, but so has the Charity Cycling UK? Worth reporting to the Charity Commissioners?

Re: Commit route to map

If you don't mind spending a bit of money, you can now create and order custom OS maps direct from ordnance survey. You can even add a route if you upload in gpx format. (others may be able to recommend a website/software to create a gpx if you don't have already)

Extremely pleasant discussion, with us walking the last 50 metres.
I've always wondered at these places where bikes aren't allowed but delivery vehicles are, can I ride my bike if i'm making a delivery?

at least this went to court, even if it took 4 years, Ive known a couple of cases involving hit and runs by drivers that the police there basically just filed away in a filing cabinet to forget about.
I'm cynically thinking the fact that the poor cyclist was an ex-police inspector means that the authorities pursued this a bit more vigorously than they would have otherwise.

Thought these looked good and was just about to buy myself one - until the postage charge came up as £15 and realised they were coming from Canada! Strange that the item price is exactly £10 rather than some random currency conversion from the canadian dollar price.

Re: Shimano Alfine 11 - Longer term reliability

Also the 8 speed is cheaper than the 11 speed, so probably comes down to whether you can/want to spend the money to get the better range. For me it was worth it once i started more touring type riding, rather than just commuting. The 8 speed just felt it could do with an extra gear at each end of the range when riding reasonable distances in the Peak district..

Re: Helmet worked for me

The problem with someone posting I did/did not wear a helmet, had an accident and it worked for me, is that its it a bit of survivorship bias. There could be a hundred other people who had exactly the same incident/circumstances and are not posting because they are dead or in a coma!

Re: Shimano Alfine 11 - Longer term reliability

i bought a very well used second hand moulton TSR with an alfine 11 hub. It was a bit battered and the seal was cracked so it wouldn't hold the transmission fluid. I was able to buy new seals and outer plastic bits but it was never quite right, i assume it had been run for a while with inadequate lubrication, and water, and muck ingress. I was able to buy a whole new internal for the hub and installed it in the old shell/wheel. Can't recall where i bought the internals (must have been a random shop that google bought up) , but all the seals and periphery items came from SJS cycles. Has run fine since - do notice that i have to tune the gearing a bit more often than another bike i had with Alfine 8 hub.

Re: Duplicate Strava Activities

Are you aware that you can sync your Garmin account to strava? So can just record on your Garmin device and it will upload onto your strava account also.
I like to do this as i like all my activities in one place - and like (or am used to) Strava. I use a Suunto watch when i run or swim, and a Karoo cycle computer when cycling and the native apps for both these devices sync to my strava account.

Or have you already got synced and just recording same thing on both devices - curious why you would do this?

Re: What saddle bag?

i used to use an old Carradice camper longflap when having to carry stuff places and devised my own quick release system so i could easily take it off when reaching my destination. You probably won't need anything that big but same QR bodge could be used on any other carradice saddle bag.
I attached one of these double carabiner things to my saddle rails with a couple of jubilee clips
Untitled.png
I fitted the top 2 straps on the bag through a couple of large keyring loops, which could then be put in and removed from the carabiner quickly. Then just had the bottom strap around seat post to buckle up.

Not quite as stable as using a rack - but worked for me.
