Re: Bottom Bracket for Touring: Shimano BB-ES300, octalink
I had one of these, now on my mum's bike (68x118) with a M430-8 chain set. It's lighter than the older ES25 and ES51, has a chromoly axle instead of heavier boron and has surface treatment. I didn't like the square taper I had before due to chainring wobble and I'm sure I could feel squareness. The ES300 was very easy spinning and stiff.

Re: Shimano MTB 10spd and 11spd actuation-ratios identical after all?
I'm guessing they are going to use 2 cable grooves on the cable bolt 1 for 10 speed and 1 for 11.

In the same press release they unveiled new Alivio M3100, the shifters no longer have 2 way release like M430 and M4000 and have under the bar gear indicator, it's basically a redressed Altus M2000, the rear derailleur also looks like the M2000.

I wonder if Mach1 will buy their facilities and equipment being a French company which apparently invented wheel building machines.

Brucey wrote:I am pretty sure that is not the case; shimano don't even own up to the RH part of the DH assembly coming apart, leave alone that you should use it for adjustment purposes (*).
IME every disc brake hub allows access to the LH cone and locknut once the disc is removed, be it 6-bolt or centre lock type.
(*) and you shouldn't; repeated movements of the RH cone will cause the cone threads to break through the insulation on the wires; if this goes to a dead short the generator is usually scrap.
cheers
On my RM66 front hub I couldn't get a cone spanner in the centerlock side so had to undo from the drive side, the rear hub was accessible on the disc side like normal.

Re: New cables - oil, or not?
On the subject of cables is flexibility or stiffness more desirable in outer cables? Shimano SP41 is stiff, Jagwire (unknown model, came with some used shifters, had a red coloured inner sheath) seems more flexible. Fibrax SP4 seems stiff in black but flexible in grey. the higher end Shimano road rear derailleurs have a new outer called OT-RS900 which seems to be coiled like a brake outer for flexibility.

Fibrax also make 'die drawn slick' inner cables in the UK they cost less than £2 each on eBay.

Re: M7x1 stainless capheads for stems etc
Normally if you buy a m5 bolt you get a 4mm Allen head, m6 bolt gets a 5mm Allen head, but Shimano bolts are m5 with a 5mm Allen head, is there a cheaper aftermarket source of these? Also the newer allen limit screws with smaller head than commonly available because the Philips drivers on multitools usually suck for JIS bolts, yet a modern PH2 screwdriver does work.

Re: What kind of stepped ferrule for these old cable stops?
While we're on the subject...
1) Do old downtube shifters (cyclo benelux) take smaller capagnolo head rather than modern shimano/sram head inners?
2) GB Arret levers take modern MTB brake inners, do they need ferrules?
Also, I thought all pre index stuff used 5mm gear outer

Is my RD-M772 dead?
The rear side front pivot has detached after foolishly tightening the 2mm grub screw that holds the main spring hook in place a bit too far it seems to have pressed the pivot apart maybe it was on its way out anyway. It was 2nd hand off ebay £16 in june, date code FD (2007 April) and very scratched up maybe it was inevitable.
I don't suppose there any way to fix it?
I have a RD-M4000 (with the m772 sealed jockey wheels) in its place it shifts slightly sluggishly compared to the M772 (maybe because its stiff and new). I bought it because the M772 wouldn't shift to big/big on the workstand without grumbling and would shift itself back down again, the upper jockey wheel bolt would tighten fine but undo itself under load, a potentially wheel/mech/hanger destruction waiting to happen. The cage seemed to have play in it but seemingly dissapeared after I disassembled and regreased it. I was planning on replacing the bolt with a 15mm pan head bolt wrapped in ptfe tape to simulate the unthreaded section that goes through the bushing as there is plenty of thread in the outer plate.

I recently got some 1997 Shimano Nexave BL-T400 brake levers on eBay NOS £7.50 they can be used with canti/roller and v brakes.
