Re: Shadow MTB rear mechs Vs older design - old tucks into smaller sprockets better?
M772 (shadow)
Max. teeth large sprocket: 36T
Min. teeth large sprocket: 32T
Min. teeth small sprocket: 11T
Max. Front Difference: 22T
Total Capacity: 45T
M591 (conventional)
Low Sprocket Max: 34T
Low Sprocket Min: 28T
Top Spocket Max: 12T
Top Spocket Min: 11T
Max. Front Difference: 22T
Total Capacity: 45T
I have both, the M772 (ebay used £16.01) is a lot more accurate at shifting and responds to the tiniest amount of pressure on the shifter (Alivio M430 in my case), the barrel adjuster on the the M591 (came with bike) never seemed to work properly I'd say it shifted ok. Despite what the specs say there is a video on youtube of someone using the M772 with 11-28 and 12-23, I use 11-30, as long as the center of the guide pulley is 26mm away from the lowest gear ( https://bikebrothers.no/wp-content/uplo ... D_Tips.pdf ) it should work.
The shorter cable run and no barrel adjuster means less friction, I use a long nose ferrule made by fibrax to keep dirt out of the outer cables ( https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bike-Outer-H ... 2749.l2649 ).
The M772 is so much easier to index. Undo cable, adjust barrel adjuster at shifter 8 dentents outward, manual push derailleur to second smallest sprocket and attach cable, pedal so it falls back to smallest sprocket, shift to second smallest sprocket again and push shifter just enough that its past the dead zone and about to actually pull cable and there should be a rubbing/buzzing sound because it wants to shift to the third smallest cog make sure it doesn't make the shift under that condition and the indexing is 99% done, might need a tiny adjustment on first ride after. I have zero chain noise in any sprocket.

Unless the front mech is flat bar specific its the wrong pull ratio, its also too long.

Re: 8 speed chain with 9 speed chainring and front and rear mechs?
The Deore M511, LX M571, Xt M751 and XTR M953 front derailleurs were sold as 8 and 9 speed compatible. The downside is specific size band clamps and top/bottom pull specific. The M511 is dual pull and 34.9 and can use adapter bands. There are loads of LX on ebay, I recently got a new old stock one for £5.

Re: shimano m590 chainset. 9 speed only?
I have an m590 48/36/26. I recently found some barely used t611 10 speed rings on ebay for £11 as future spares. Both 26t cogs are stamped 9/10 speed (58g), the middle rings are identical (96g), the m590 outer ring (not drilled for a guard) is 98g the t611 outer ring is 110g and I think the extra weight is reinforcement to fit a chainguard.

Re: Gear cable sticking or what?
I think have the exact same issue as the original poster. It usually occurs a little while after shifting from 6 to 5 on a 9 speed cassette.
Initially thought it was the cassette as it started happening at about 2500 miles and 5 and 6 were the most used sprockets. It isn't the chainset because it happens with an octalink M430 and Hollowtech 2 M590. It isn't the chain KMC 9.93 or Shimano HG93. It isn't the shifters M390 or M430. It isn't the cassette HG200-9 (11/13/15/17/19/21/24/28/32) or HG50 (11/12/14/16/18/20/23/26/30). It isn't the front mech M390/M581/M590/M591.
It isn't the rear mech or cables M591 and M772. So I think its the freehub FH-RM66.

The only difference is the offset on the t610 is 7.6mm and 45mm pcd and the t670 is 7.8mm with 44/45mm pcd, 2013-2014 specifications page 56 https://productinfo.shimano.com/#/archive

When did square taper appear and how long did it take for cotter pin cranks to disappear?

Re: Lubrication and protection
Nearly all current /recent shimano RDs have a design fault whereby there is no spring preload on parts of the parellelogram when the mech is against the high gear stop screw. This causes the RD to rattle itself to death if the bike is ridden around on the smallest sprocket; I have have seen many such examples on 'non-cyclist' bikes which are used in this way.
Does this mean the 'rapid rise' 'low normal' rear derailleurs of the early 00s are immune to this?

Re: Front mech reccomendations for 8 speed
This is what I mean about a chainguard as insurance against derailment, as you can see the outer cage sits over a 'shelf' on the chainguard so the chain can't get under it and a there is a lip so the chain can't get over it.

Re: Front mech reccomendations for 8 speed
A low clamp might help for preventing deraillment in big ring as it sits closer. FD-M360 or FD-M412 can you fit a plastic trouser guard guard to the big ring? A chain should have a tough time getting out under the derailleur and over the guard.

Re: Anyone know where to get the screw that fastens a Shimano SM-SP18 cable guide?
I'm using a 12mm m5 bolt (takes a 3mm allen key) on the SM-SP18M (blue, comes with a metal spacer). I sprayed the whole thing in silicone surface protector too.
