College valley have thete own informative website
Details about walks the war memorial the planes crash sites hillfort etc
I'm not aware of the camping questions you ask....but if there's issues the border is nearby and there's no law of trespass on the other side of fence ( littery as the border is a wire fence in many places around there )
Your vehicle can only go as far as the national trust car park at hethpool
As mentioned wooler is a good base
And stay a night in mounthooly bunkhouse
Tberes also the wild cattle at Chillingham Castle to see...I think the called oryx and now so rare that even vets are restricted and vetted from treating them incase any germs are passed onto them

Re: Winter touring in North East - with children!
I previously mentioned about the qiet rds in Northumberland
The college valley does not allow any vehicles in other than the few farmers and odd house owners there...how qiet can you get for bikes
The north's answer to zeermat in Switzerland.
.there's an independent bunkhouse at the end called mounthooly...just at the base of the pennine and the impresive hen hole waterfalls for a free cold shower

My mistake
It's a Halifax
It hit GLENDHU HILL which is west of kielder reservoir and to the east of cycle route 10 border reivers territory

Re: Winter touring in North East - with children!
There's a fair bit of decent historic interests up north east depending on what you like
The train stops at Haltwhistle or brampton so you can ride along hadrians wall and forts with campsites along the way...you can veer off into the wilds of kielder and stay a night in an abandoned shepherds hut ...I'm sure a 9yr old will love that ..this area pitch black at night fir star gazing there's wreckage if a downed dakota plane which is now a war grave
Towards wooler area there many pre historic hill forts to be found and its also the capital of the ancient Kings of Northumberland...in the pennines around wooler there's 9 ( I think ) plane wreckage from the war with some wreckage still around ..all interesting and moving thoughts ...St cuthberts cave were monks hid his body whilst hiding from the vikings in pursuit from holy island
Northumberland is a great place for bikes as there's many rail track forest tracks and very quiet rds with some very smart villages in between
Theres seahouses and a trip to the farnes uslands on boat ..Bamburgh castle scene of many films including new indiana jones film ...castles galore all over
Most start places are accessible via local northern rail trains from Sunderland or Newcastle
Hats off to your boy doing 40 miles a day as well..I'm a little out of touch with youngsters interests but there's plenty to do up here

Re: Fitting disc brakes
Dr pepper
I dont want to challenge your welding skills etc
Safety wise any weld on steel changes the echanical metal properties next to the weld this area is known as the heat affected zone HAZ
The only way to help with this is to have the welded area subjected to heat treatment in a controlled environment where the temperate of heat relief is calculated based on carbon content and thickness etc
The metal is heated then held for a given time and slowly allowed to cool
This helps prevents minor cracking and or fatigue cracks in the HAZ
All you have done is make this area HAZ
Extremely brittle and very unsafe
The continuing vibrations through the fork will one day result in a fatigue crack and the ultimate failure of the fork
I'm sorry to make you aware of this but I would think seriously about replacing your fork
I'm sure you will read up online the effects of welding and the HAZ

Re: Fitting disc brakes
I believe you have to be certain that the forks and heafset will be able to take the extra forces implied on it
Not just a case of buying converting brackets ...could be serious safety issues so please speak to a professional befure you attempt this

Re: Chain length wrong
Thats a fair explanation
However the through the derailiuer method that I was shown was for a rd bike and yes theres a lot of chain slap ...so much if you stop pedalling the momentum will have the chain hit the stays ?? But it does ride ok and changes gear ok

Re: Chain length wrong
This chain lengh scenario can be a little contrasting at times
Now I'm only just learning last few months about maintenance of my own bikes
So I watched tbe park video using the big big method and I'm not at all going to challenge them as I'm out if my depth
The mathematical way is another format but I have tried both and they do not end up same lenght??
I have recently done a 2 day course on my own bike where it was stripped bare by me and rebuilt by me under the mechanics watchful eye and advice
He showed me another way of small small through tbe derailiuer and pull chain till it's a 10mm gap between chain and bottom jockey wheel
My qwery are
Park tool method and mathematical do not take into account the derailiuer which can be short medium or long cage so it cannot be correct for all of them
The small small through the derailiuer seems to have the chain longer and it is looser than the other 2 methods
So to a layman like me who is over curious ?? Which method do most mechanics use

Re: Dura ace c24 wheels.
Theres few pics of my damaged rim on C24s
I think this happened on a long decent overheating the rims..these rims expanded slightly and pulled out the spoke
A reputable carbon repair shop said its irreparable as the spokes n nipple not long enough to get in again
Anyway I now feel duped by shimano marketing these as carbon wheels when the "carbon " part is nothing more than a layer if black electricians tape wrapped round an alloy
I wrongly assumed the black part to be solid carbon and bonded onto the alloy brake surface
How can shimano get away with this

Re: Dura ace c24 wheels.
Ç24 durace front rim only is also sat
SJS for 150ish .
I then have to reclaim hubs spokes and pay for a wheel rebuild
I have been constantly searching web for around 3 weeks with no luck on a bargain ....gutted I missed the advert that you jumped on
Hopefully they have some left
So.please share your source of supply
Thanks

Re: Dura ace c24 wheels.
Where did you buy them from
I only ask as I have just had a rim failure due to over cooking brakes on a long decent ....the wheel is a write off that cannot be repaired so I need to replace it
Thanks

Re: Aldi Bike Stand (foldable workstand)
When the bike is in the frame clamp then balances by gravity
Will the clamp at the end of the frame clamp tube actually grip enough to stop the bike spinning if you were to turn the bike to say view the bottom bracket

Re: Why the paper cups?
I dont use paper or plastic anymore and I will ask a cafe beforehand if they have real cutlery
Proper cutlery left on a table states that this table needs cleared and cleaned evictivley
Paper plates etc are binned by the customer and a table will rarely get a proper cleaning as staff cannot see it's just been used
Paper cups plates etc whilst many say ..yes but there recyclable???
They are vastly bulky so they fill a bin liner very fast resulting in more bin liner waste ..this needs transported to waste factory and costs the cafe so they charge us more for food as they must have more waste cost
If its council bins then they have more waste that needs collected by Van's polluting the air and also will increase your council tax to pay for the Van's
These recyclable cups are transpoted by polluting trucks to be sorted in a factory powered by fossil fuels
They are then recycled into whatever by another factory powered by fossil fuels
And then transported by polluting trucks back to the cafe at another expense to the owner which us passed to us
Avoid cafes with this policy and let them know and they soon change there business plan if no customers are coming in
Alternatively like supermarket bags
Tax a one use throw away cup
