Re: Using smaller chainrings on a road double for touring
NickJP wrote:Use an MTB double FD instead - they're designed for a smaller jump between the chainrings. And with only two chainrings, they shift fine with road shifters. I use Deore XT 2x10 FDs on several bikes with either SRAM or Shimano road shifters, and either 42/29 or 38/26 chainrings.
I had mechanics do similar with rear mech
I had DURACE short cage mech 11/28 10 speed
Replaced the rear mech with XT mtb 9 speed rear mech and fitted 11/36 mtb cassette
Front durace mech remained as did the 50/34 compact ....shifting at the rear was fine and sweet

I'm a trendy consumer. Just look at my SM-G950F using hovercraft full of eels.
To be a little more specific
Did you fit the chain rings to your existing cranks and bottom bracket etc and manage to have tbe spider and Bolt circle diameter all compatible ?? .or was it a full new front drive .
.thanks

Re: First bike advice for C2C & other leisure cycling
The most scenic parts of the c2c are off rd parts
The very best being the rookhope incline of which a gravel bike would be hard pushed in the terrain
After that the waskerley way/consett/Sunderland railway is all but off road and mostly now has been upgraded into tarmac surface ..so that would be doable on either bike
You will need to get some riding in as theres a lot of hills from hartside to waskerley
Good luck with your adventure and bike selection is always hard ..even if you know what you want

If that's your concern, you might be better off campaigning for them to slow down and stop offering next day deliveries. Good luck with that, it's something many people value highly, just look at all the times people praise the good service received because they only ordered yesterday and here it is... I guarantee it's responsible for more transport underusage than oversized boxes. Trailers don't leave the warehouse when they're full, they leave when the complex trunking schedule dictates. That goes all the way down the chain, imagine if your street had a delivery day like a bin day, the savings would be phenomenal, well the environmental ones would be, the financial costs are already so low it'd make little difference.
It is about what we value and the whole logistics chain knows the cost of that. Every tiny thing is costed, over and under packaging, losses, damages, these things are considered low cost compared to a customer getting their package a bit later than expected.
That's fair enough and I guess it relates to online type delivery to which this thread refers and the Van's are full of different items each customer wants asap
My issue above was aimed at supermarket or retailers types where a truck is fully loaded with say breakfast cereal only 2/3rds full ..
The later mention of pre packed coffe satcheys by another member not full ...theres many products on the shelfs like this .all boxes are same size all the bags contain same amount of product ...tberes no reason they cannot be filled 90 odd % full to replace transported air ..lots if boxed products like this are never filled right to the top ...they know our eyes form a sense and opinion of size so rapid that we make our choice on the larger unfilled box as opposed to the smaller completely filled box without thinking or observing
I know the excess cardboard is easily and efficiently recycled ...but dont forget it is manufactured in a factory which will have fumes gases polution etc as an unnecessary by product
So excess packaging of large cardboard is not that environmentally as friendly as we may be led to believe

Re: Overpackaging
Like @psamathe I often complain about packaging
If I get any product thsts only half filled a box etc i complain to the retailer
I start by saying i am very aware that you sell by weight and not volume ...I then point out if the box is say 1/3rd filled with air ..the consumer is in effect paying for that air as it means in this case the trucks are transporting 1/3 rd less product than they could if the packet was 100% full ...that's also 1 extra truck on tbe rd every 3 that's transporting the same product
More trucks ...more cost to the retailer.passed onto the consumer and more trucks on tbe rd creating environment issues and traffic jams

Re: NC500 Scotland
19 if us did this last year mostly on rd bikes but few on tourer bikes ..nobody was carrying any gear
.I was on a s works 50mm aero rims 25mm tyres
We followed NC500 upto melvich on north coast then headed south down the central belt though kinbrace Syre Altnaharra crask invergordon
This was to avoid the traffic on the east coast and to take in almost deserted rds on the way
The whole route is on tarmac and considering the frost up north the rds were in very very good condition so do not worry about tyre or wheel choice
Tbe well known big climb of the bealag is a long long drag without the burden of being laden with gear
The coastal path after applcross to shieldag torridon is both epic scenery and a lot of short steep climbs and very exposed to the weather
The rd from torridon to kinlochewe is a great scenic ride it's worth stopping in lay bys there just to look through binoculars at the scenery
I am reasonably fit ( c2c in 10 hrs) and as a holiday we done this over 11 days ..9 riding taking 2 days off in ulapool and melvich and also to gave a good days riding but also time to sightseeing explore and socialise
You will be very pushed doing it in that time taking into account setting up camp etc and having some precious time yourself and sight seeing as theres a lot of if history out there relating to the clearances and the scenery in itself
We stayed bnb hotel lochcarron ..YH gailoch YH ulapool ( campsites there) YH durness (camping)
Melvich halladale camp pods ( fab camp site )
Altnaharra bnb invergordon bnb Inverness YH
Its a truly magnificent ride epic scenery
There was a lot of camper vans on route and yes I read all the bummpth about the bad press camper Van's bring ...
You go for it ....but my advise is it's a holiday .not a TT if you do it to fast you will miss out on a lot of interesting stop overs ( Theres many interesting distilleries around the invergordon area ) tberes a lot of people to chat too

Re: More braking power - bigger discs or upgrade to hydraulics?
I don't have any exact figures on this....but believe that changing the size of rotors will put different force factors on the forks to which the forks you have may not be able to cope and may become dangerous ....I have no idea how to confirm the maximum torque stress that is applicable to a fork
Sorry if you feel that is bad news

Re: Cancelling Holidays.
I've not read all the responses so apologies if this is already on
If the holiday you booked is no longer as it appears in the brochure ..ie some hotel bars closed...hotel facilies reduced ...children's play area closed etc etc
Then you may very well have an excuse in that the agent has broken there contract in not supplying what they said and what you paid for
I heard about this tactic during first series of lockdown and passed it onto a friend of wifes
They said the same things to the agents and then the agents refunded on that reason
Now....that was 1st time around and agents may have written into contracts that everything advertised may not be available from the day you booked
I'm not a consumer rights guy
Just passing on viable excuses to attempt your refund
Further note
Pay for everything on credit card ALWAYS
You will always have more recourse on a package holiday than one where you book flights transfers accommodation separate...
sometimes all you save is minuscule amounts...agents know this so they now have great deals on a package
Holiday that costs not a lit more
Good luck and if you get a refund please share your " excuse used " to the agents

Re: Dangerous front lights
Yes good video...some rural rds become hazardous as we let our guard down thinking theres nobody else around ...I guess the stop sign is ignored as the motorist cannot see the cyclist because of the blind spot so he thinks why stop when the road is clear
The staggered cross road seems a good recourse with very little environment damage as well
Rural country roads can be as dangerous as city roads

Re: Bike storage shed suggestions
Just an idea depending on your diy skills and time available
Theres always a good selection of used double glazed windows and doors available on gumtree and even in the DG shops
You could start looking now and in a few weeks have a door and couple windows then build your frame around that in wood or the very more expensive composite wood ..you may well get enough composite off cuts from gumtree
The DG door will be a lot more secure and we all know as soon as you buy and erect any size purpose built shed ...you will soon have it full and will need more space
My brother built a very large aviary for his birds in this manner ...bought two sets of used patio doors and windows ..and the aviary look fab
Much better than shed doors that usually bend and twist
And windows f

Re: Propane space heaters
Yes it seems that you will agree that you will never warm the garage up enough to be comfortable ...there simply not built to get warm
As well as insulating the cold floor in any manner ..you can also kind if insulate the cold brick walls by lining them with slatwall sheets
These are the panels you see in shops
I lined my garage with them
Nit only will it help with some insulation they are white to reflect some heat and light and are also much easier on the eye as the slots are there for hooks etc doing away with drill holes everywhere
Thetes shops being refirbed or closed everywhere ..ask around and you will soon have enough sheets of these fir your garage and it will soon look like a real workshop
I no longer call it my garage ..its called the bike shop
Good luck anyways
