If you do not want a flashing light or helmet light
Or a single light or 2 next to each other as they all have merits and a downside and very reflective clothing that is not black
I have 2 lights on the bar but one is angled down to light the path 3metre infront of me
This is solely for mtb night riding
But I do use the rd slightly to get to the off rd sections ....would this dipped light and the resulting shine on the rd from it ..be a worthwhile " indicator " as no cars or motorbikes tend to have a lit up rd immiedatky in front of them
I would never know as I'm not the driver of the cars watching me ..the same as every other way others have there lights mounted do you really know how effective each variation may be ?
..car drivers rarely stop to tell you that your lit up well for some constructive advice
I'm reading and contemplating everybody's input as I want to minimise the risk to me and not rely on the highway code..who's right or wrong etc ..could be too late by then

My ceilings are about 240 cm, that makes a lot of unused air space
I have XX m2 floor space, and YY m3 air space
I used to remove my front wheel, then I realised I did not need to, I could just tilt the machine

Re: Dangerous front lights
A very good scenario that all us cyclist should be aware of..the driver not complaining but making us aware
I have certainly been aware of that circumstance
I also at times when a cyclist is at the wrong angle and wrong distance at the same time a single solid light can appear like a street light..again you can pull out in front of the bike
A small headlight and/or a flashing light along with the road legal solid light
Be safe

Re: SCAM ALERT - Overpayment by cheque
Just cash the cheque at a "cash converters" type place, that way if they try to put a stop on it later it's not your problem.
I can understand how you are cashing in the scammers cheque
However are you yourself then becoming a "thief" as you have cashed his cheque but not sent on the item you were selling
Now I know the scammers are thiefs but they also have legal protection and could report you as you have infact committed a crime against them
Are you relying on the fact that they will not contact the police as it will bring unwanted attention on them

Re: Bike service establishments
I was toying with the idea of opening a service only shop doing nothing but service with the odd sale of consumable components
I am not a cytech mechanic but also I'm not too afraid of having a go at something...to put it bluntly ....there is not a lot of service only places around which is why I was thinking customers would repeatedly return to the bike shop to have them serviced out of " loyalty" to the shop,? Therfore always ignoring a service only unit
And also general bike riders who do not know the bikes very well will no doubt go to a shop to have a bike serviced once every 5 year if that
More frequent uses will maybe appreciate a service only unit with more purpose
I'm aware of facts and figures and business plans etc but the mechanics in the shops are the foot soldiers in the industry and it is them who know how many customers walk through the door
So if you are a cytech mechanic reading this and you work in a shop
How many services would you do in a week on average
Thanks gents

Re: Wall mounted work stand - any good?
I bought a reasonable priced wall stand ...
I welded a sepearte tube to a plate and bolted this to the wall stand plate
This allows me to clamp the welded tube to the rafters in the garage roof .which allows tbe bike stand to hang from roof .
I have a couple of roof clamps so regardless of the floor mess.i can always work on the bike and more importantly walk around it with no obstructions from conventional stands
Afterwards the stand unclamps from roof and gets put to one side
I work as a fabricator in a workshop so the modification where very simple for me

Bike service establishments
Would any shop mechanics be informative to say if the service only part of a shop is a returnable business or are they there as part of the whole process that the owner may reluctantly keep going ...so would the owner himself have much left for himself if he employed say 2 mechanics

Re: Gearing ratios
Not a lot if help for your good self but maybe to others on a budget
I had a 10 speed 50/34 compact with durace 28 cassette and short cage mech
.getting older and taking part in the fred whitton several years ago this gear would never get me up the multiple of steep climbs
I asked mechanics how to get a higher climbing gear because the DURACE short cage was maxed out at 28 so they put on
a 10 speed 36T (11×36) cassette
And used a 9 speed shimamo XT mountain bike mech ..I believe this is possible as the indexing of a 10 speed road shifter has the same ratio pull of a 9 speed mtb mech
Whatever the science the performance and shifting was sweet as
My only concern was how daft a DURACE would look with a MTB mech ..
I had a few strange looks at the start line .however I soon got over this issue and the climbs in front of me ..if you haven't got the legs or age on your side USE the law/maths mechanical advantage to aid you
This was several years but I now hear now that ultegra do a long cage mech so the road bike may not look as odd

Re: Dogs off lead on shared use path
mattsccm wrote:I get the same on a daily basis on my commute. I treat shared use paths as a place to move slowly, often walking pace near walkers. Seems reasonable to me. Dogs don't tend to be a problem until the owners call them to heel where upon the dog stops mooching in the bushes and stands confused in the middle of the track. I prefer dogs off the lead in most cases.
Like you, I suspect, I find that away from the honey pots the walkers thin out.
In the same way that cyclists like some concessions from faster movers on the roads I feel that walkers like that on shared use paths. As in any place, the faster over slows and gives way.
Should you maim a hound I suspect it would be a civil legal case in which case it would be your insurance company/legal advisers against theirs.
Maybe this has been posted already but theres way too many unrelated posts too scroll through
Last year a very much documented case was made very public and was in fact in the law courts so it is a legal outcome and not an opinion
A cyclist hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road at a crossing when her light was on red and the cyclist road traffic on green
The woman pedestrian was also oblivious to her surroundings as she was on her phone
Tbe judge ruled that the cyclist was also 50% to blame as he should be expecting/anticipating sudden movements ahead of him ( words too that effect)
The official judge quotes are above me but where related to the writings in the highway code .and I assume of legal remarks
How the cyclst is to blame fur any of it is beyond me ...but the law disagrees
This case was related to the road and highway code but I could assume it would be corrugated to footpaths therefore apportionating 50% responsibility to the cyclist
Maybe cycling UK have thete legal thoughts on this in one in there pages somewhere
I hope this helps the original post all these months back and any talk about dog mess etc be posted on dog pet sites as it's not really related to the post in question

I did this going the other way up to Orkney, started in Alness, up to Altnaharra and across to Forsinard, camped the night and then went through the estate roads to Altnabreac station and on to Thurso and Scrabster. Was on a Spec AWOL with 38mm tyres and a trailer.
Griggsy ...on Google images that Rd from Forsinard through the estates looks glorious and similar to the altnaharra syre Kinbrace Rd
I don't really camp but will do hostels bunkhouses etc....so if we were to do a weekend riding that area around the estate. ...do you recall seeing a lot of civilisation where a lodge.bunkhouse etc could be found
This would be mtb weekend but was that Estate Rd surface doable on road bikes with 28mm max tyres

Re: Dogs off lead on shared use path
It was impossible to talk to her as she just ranted, so I kept quiet. As far as I know there are no by-laws that require a lead on the path, but there might be. Assume there isn't.
I am always extremely careful when kids and dogs, and horses are on a path/road, and I am very safety conscious. I'm 66 years old.[/quote]
I am one dog owner and cyclist
There was an extract in our local paper several months ago about the huge amount of paid dog walkers up on our local hills
And the article was about a hill walker getting concerned about this
In the article our council authouruty stipulated that in our area the following bye laws ( I assume) were in force
A dog lead must not be longer than 1 and 1/2 meters
You cannot be in charge of more than 4 dogs at any one time
I was unaware of this and I guess many others are,, however it all makes some sense
I am at a loss how shops are allowed to sell these reel leads if they are not (legal) in our authority area
I am no lawyer so please no interagation of me
Regarding the possible insurance type claims,, I assume that all readers who post on here are members of U.K. Cycling, so I guess if this happens to you whilst your on your bike then the insurance you have with UK cycling will hopefully help
