I also recall a great rd ride on your doorstep to seahouses or beadnell on coast
POWBURN east to hedgely hall...beanley...short track north to scar brea...nursery hill..new berwick from here is a fantastic rd across the deserted hills to A1( subway) via ravenhole ....Hepburn...botany...haughterslaw...north Charlton ( A1subway) Preston...chat hill station...then signs to beadnell then seahouses ...for a boat trip to the farne islands or short ride up coast to bambugh castle
Powburn to seahouse is around 20 miles ...theres a climb at the start but not drastic ( says me )
The place mames are not all villages so you may not see them on a map

Re: Northumberland, Powburn.
Yep Ingram valley and there's a small museum/cafe at the end detailing all about stone age builds around the area
College valley is picturesque place ...park up at hethpool as the rd into the valley does not allow traffic other than the few locals..its a great easy traffic free rd ride and interesting war memorial of the airplane crash sites in nearby hills follow the tracks after tbe rd if you bear left by tbe memorial
As the rd stops at the bunk house moonthooly
The wild cattle at the haunted gillingham castle east of wooler
The otterburn ranges are almost traffic free rd cycling for miles
Park at hepple and ride all along to alwinton barrowburn and to the border ridge or to the Roman fort at chew green then to the dere street lost roman road
Theres a nearby WW1 trench complex used for training
Lots of droving paths from whiskey smugglers
Few abandoned shepherds houses in area
Holy island crossing is a great ride but check out tides
Theres cuthbert cave in wooler area
Lots of videos on you tube off Northumberland cyclist pennine cyclists etc
I know you say you do not want to drive but honestly the rds are almost empty . Car parking no big issue ..and with a little research on nearby attraction you can make up some great rides
Systran type rides in the area are pennine way ..coast n castles..sandstone way
Great county for bikes

Re: Attempted rip off by Virgin media.
You can leave any provider and get out of any contract typically 12/18 months that does a price increase in that time
You may have to give them notice
It be a good time to get them to reduce your bill with a threat of leaving hanging over them

Re: Attempted rip off by Virgin media.
Yes you have to haggle unfortunately
If I see any form of voucher /hurdle advertised then that's the red flag saying they will do discount so just ASK
Many times over years friends and family alike say to me about how I can be bothered haggling almost everything
I would always reply even if it just £10
You would pick it up if tbe floor if you dropped it ..or
You would take a few beers from the pub for nothing ?
I work for my family not s salesman ?
That's an hours pay at work I've saved
Relate the saved money to somethong and you not be shy about haggling
The economic world is on our side in a way now
Everything is expensive so you start by saying I pay rents fuel council tax ....everything else is a luxury I can drop
If the price is not viable

Re: Ordered a cassette from MERLIN cycle and received workshop/OEM part?
The OEM chain I got came in the small plastic bag..of which I'm happy as it "reduces" packaging as opposed to the hard plastic retail box
Like most im keen on tbe environment etc but lack a lot of knowledge in the actual recycle process
So ...of the 2 packages. The plastic box or bag
Which one us most likely to have the least impact in production
Which one will have the best after use in recyclable industry
Tbe packet appears to me the more friendly but its got no after use and may only be burned ( not good)
The box can be used at home and can be chopped into bits and re used as another form if plastic in tbe recycle factory
So which us the more environmental friendly because I don't really know which one

Re: Ordered a cassette from MERLIN cycle and received workshop/OEM part?
Just for reference gents as I was not sure what an OEM was until a search on it
Now this has just arrived from merlin
Am I correct in assuming tbe cassette is retail stock with the fancy box and hanger to show off in the shop
The KMC chain in only plastic is OEM ,,,,?
Before i was aware of what OEM was I would have applauded merlin for sending a metal chain in a packet as opposed to box protecting it
The 2 did arrive in a small cardboard box

Stayed a week in the PARK hotel in polensa
That's very bike orientated with large underground lock up with bike hangars and personell lockers etc
Pollensa itself is inundated with bike shops
More shops than pubs

Re: Winter touring in North East - with children!
It's a good question and one thats always asked when first heard of
There's the official reports etc and what ever else you can find in a web search
I've walked/ridden these area several times and with my son who can fly a light aircraft
He says as well as the archiac instruments back in the day ....a lot if war planes never had things like altimeter and other instruments as it meant more stuff for the pilots to learn and also to keep watch on
And remember these airmen were in short supply so they need to qwickly learn to fly aircraft very fast and not be concerned with instrument overload ...
Apparently he reckons this was one if the reason the spitfires and hurricanes were so successful because they were very basic
I guess if your flying without altimeter in pennines when the mist or fog fast approaches then your in trouble
It is unbelievable sad how multiple fatalities can occur without any seemly upgrades to instruments or training to prevent future fatilities time and time again
Maybe others have other official explanations to the loss of these aircraft's but as you see your self...it beggars belief

Re: Winter touring in North East - with children!
I add a couple happy snaps incase you do opt to stay wooler and do the college valley
I'm not sure what order they came out
All in striking distance of wooler
Northumberland ancient Kings palace
St cuthberts cave
College valley map at hethpool car park
Some polite advice...if you do visit any of the plane crash sites you are expected not to touch or remove anything as it is a place where airmen lost there lives and there is still a fair amount if wreckage at some sites
The spitfire site has no wreckage is very hard to find and has a cross with pilots name on so as to pay ones respects
