I was surprised at £3,500.

Hi Jonathon

The specs of the bike are on following site...

https://www.oxfordbikeworks.co.uk/expedition

Add to this a rohloff hub, Ortleib Roller Classic panniers front and rear with bar bag , Supply and fit SON 28 dynamo hub with Sinewave Revolution
USB charger.....

This bike has been put together in collaboration with experienced expedition cycle adventurer Tom Allen of TomsBikeTrip.com, using his experience of travelling the world by bike. Every part of this bike has been built with longevity in mind; every component carefully thought through. We've resisted the temptation to up-spec it to justify an inflated price, using top-grade components where it makes sense and simple, easily replaceable parts where it doesn't. A Chris King headset, Tubus racks and supremely strong hand-built wheels are key components of this bike, eliminating as far as possible the chance of mechanical failure in the most critical long-term parts of the bike.

Re: Drive Belt vs Chain, Rohloff Hub vs Derailler, and other questions.

Thanks, everyone.

I reckon it will be two years before I go on the tour, but will jaunt around UK first, once I buy the bike. Its expensive, but I hope it lasts twenty years, and as such, costs less than car insurance a year. I'm not sure how one can justify £3500+ for a bike, panniers, dynamo, etc.... but hand built wheels sound like a good idea.

Just wanted to say thank you for your kind help.

Drive Belt vs Chain, Rohloff Hub vs Derailler, and other questions.

Hi All

I am brand new to touring and am thinking of going around the world by bike, working on organic farms along the way. If money was not an object, what features on a bike would you have?

Touring or Mountain Bike Are mountain bikes feasible?

Steel, aluminium or titanium frame? I have been told Steel is best because it can be welded.

Chain or Drive belt? I have been told Chain is best as the cutting out a section of the frame builds in weakness, and belt drives are not available in many less developed countries.

Rohloff hub or derailler? There are pros and cons to both, I know.

Dynamo with usb charger, vs no dynamo. No dynamo may be the way to go, as maps rather than gps might be best.

Rim brakes or disc brakes

Optional extras What features on a bike are a must (e.g. Mirror, lights, what paniers and bags?)

I have have looked at an Oxford Bike Works Expedition Model with a Rohloff hub..... what are your thoughts on this model compared to Koga, and the other brands?

Thank you for any help you can give.

May you be happy and free from suffering.

Re: First Bike

Thank you

Food for thought.

YEs, maybe a DAwes Galaxy Ultra, or, for expedition, a Ridgeback Expedition is best?

Hmm...

Both good bikes, I guess.

First Bike

Hello

My second post. I read Tom Allen's book, have sold my car, and plan on going around the world. OK, I am a bit crazy. But I intend to set off in two years time.

But, as for a bike.... for expedition travel you kind of need an expedition bike? There's the Koga world traveller s2.0? The Oxford Works Expedition. Both pricey and with options.

Do you think it best to invest straight in an expensive tourer, or pick up another bike that is cheaper first, then invest nearer the time.

I have seen three that are new:
    Dawes Galaxy Ultra
    Ridgeback Expedition
    Giant SLR 1
Trouble is, not sure what bike I want. I am an experienced hillwalker in Scotland, but due to damaged tendons, have to take up biking to stay sane.

Can you tour world on bikepacking bike? What's the best model? Does open up avenues? I live in Scotland.

Should I be investing in a cheaper bike first (like those listed above), before buying a Koga or Oxford's Expediiton, or some other bike?

Or should I just jump straight in, head first!

What is a good first bike?

Now, I have trouble with decisions... at moment. I am physically fit but head needs some work. :D
For now, just fancy touring outer hebrideas and Scotland and learn all about bikes (only ever ridden mountain bikes).

Anyway, thank you for any advice your can give.

Re: Bad Knees and Bike Size

Thank you, everyone.

Very kind for you to reply.

You validated what i kind of knew, but needed to check.

I have seen a Dawes ultra galaxy, a ridgeback epedition, and giant srl1, and looking to buy those instead. Not sure which is best to buy, but will have to buy online as all away out on north end of skye.

I thought it best to get into a cheaper bike, than jumping for a koga or Oxford Bikeworks Expedition straight off.

I have a crazy idea of touring the world. Hence Koga world traveller, which has a new edition apparently.

Anyway, thank you again. Much appreciated.

Bad Knees and Bike Size

Hello

I am brand new to touring. A friend lent me a 51 cm Koga world traveller, with a view to sell it for me for £1500.

I am 6ft, and from charts, seem to need a 57cm+ frame.

When riding bike my knees began to hurt and they are not good after 100 Km.

Is it the frame size? Do I just raise the seat post further? OR is the bike geometry just too small for me?

The bike is a few years old but not used much. It retails around £2000, and I am not sure this is a good buy at £1500. So, looking at dawes galaxy, the new Koga, or a Oxford Expedition. Bear in mind I have no experience of touring, and only began because my Achilles tendons do not allow me to go hill walking for the foreseeable future.

Thank you for any advice you can give.

Cheers
