Re: the young and social distance

Often seen in super markets during lockdown:-

People with no idea why they are there or what they need to buy, just picking up products breathing over them and replacing them somewhere near where they got them from and continuing to dither oblivious of others around them!!!

People holding long conversations on mobile phones. again oblivious of others

If you are trying to follow the one way system and observing the 2 metre markers a traffic jam of frustration builds up, while the supermarket blares out instructions over the tannoy.

A really lovely experience to avoid, I love shopping NOT!!!

You just have to laugh or just go for a bike ride.

Re: Wobbly Cassette

Thanks Brucey

I gave it all a good clean this afternoon.

I was not sure about the large washer which had attached itself to the hub. There was some dirt in the area around the washer. I will give it all another clean before reassembly.

I always hope that all this information helps someone else along the way.

Re: Wobbly Cassette

Hello All.

Recently, during an after ride clean, I found the cassette to be rather wobbly. It is a 7 speed RSX, so pretty old, but not huge mileage.

After some internet searches I decided on complete disassembly.

I found the swaged head of the 10mm bolt to be partially sheared off the main bolt. a new bolt has been ordered at the LBS for £3

This is probably caused by heavy handed assembly at some point.

I had at one point suspected the cassette to be cheaply made and therefore loose on the freehub, time will tell after reassembly.

Has anyone found damage to this bolt to be a common problem?

Re: Electric cars - Noise (or not)

Electric cars need noise to warn that they are around. They also need to have control on their acceleration, they can be very quick. I can imagine a lot of problems with uncontrolled use in the future. In the wrong hands they will be a menace. To many they will be like playing a computer game in the virtual world. Too many people have lost a sense of reality or consideration for others. I am very surprised that the petrol heads have not latched on to electric already. They are definitely not like the old milk floats!!!

Re: SON Delux hub feeling rough

Good afternoon all.

Just discovered my Schmidt K179 (2006) hub very rough and stiff, but no play.

I have details of what to do from SJSC but slightly confused about whether they will need to dismantle the wheel to send the hub off to Germany.

I asked the Lady on the phone and was told it would be clear in the email.

We have so much bad stuff going on here at the moment that I cannot think straight.

Need more bike rides and less rubbish in my life:

Thanks for the replies.

Re: Developers- New Housing

Just an update on the land grab:

I started this last week and I am not surprised by the responses.

It is clear from the information that I have, the developer is definitely trying a "land grab". The boundary is 170feet long and is not uniformly straight, and has an ancient ditch on their side.

I have engaged a surveyor at great cost as the site is not easy to measure with a tape.

It is unlikely that the developer would accept my own findings anyway.

At the point where they are trying to grab up to 3 metres of my land, it is planned to build a house, but they seem to have found there is not room to build it legally. The house would end up with a 15 foot back garden, they are trying to achieve 22 foot as on the original plan, they stated to me that their back gardens are usually 30 feet long.

It just goes to show how vigilant you have to be as people will steal anything from you these days, just to make a fast buck.

If you have any type of development near your, whether it is a small extension by a neighbour or a housing estate, be very vigilant.

I used to trust some people, I now trust no one!!!!

Thanks for the responses.

Re: Developers- New Housing

I am not really sure what has happened to our country, it is now consumed with greed and selfishness, perhaps I am getting too old and grumpy!!

It seems that many of us across the country have experience of the poor development of LEGO houses, cannot call them homes!!

We have urbanisation almost from Eastbourne to Southampton along the south coast and as far back as The South Downs National Park, they now seem to want to put houses east to west to the north of The National Park, probably Eastbourne to Winchester. We should not forget the ever extending London going south, joining Surrey towns with Sussex towns, plus concreting The Garden of England (Kent). The whole of the South East will soon be houses and concrete. Now what is that green stuff? Oh Grass!!!

I could say a lot more about the corruption, bullying and manipulation that has taken place with the development behind me, but I value my kneecaps. To quote a friend of one of local the characters involved, "Unfortunately XXXXX is the local wide boy"

Anyway back to the plot, I am in conversation with various people and will contact my solicitor tomorrow and a surveyor should the problem get tricky. I am hoping that the developer's surveyor will talk to me to come to an amicable agreement.

It is likely that I will have to send the tree fellers packing in the morning as they want to take my hedge down first.

All I want to do is live in peace, ride my bike and go for nice walks.

Thanks for all the replies, it helps to ease the stress !! :) :)

Re: Developers- New Housing

The deeds for my property and that of my neighbour show a clear boundary as a ditch which has not altered since my place was built in 1963. They are trying to put the new boundary fence up to 1M inside my boundary!!

Apparently the surveyor is using Ordinance Survey Data to determine my and the other 40 existing house boundaries. The site is an old football field, which is made up of several pieces of land previously used for farming.

I have asked for a meeting with the surveyor to discuss and measure our plot.

I have also learnt other stuff about this lot, and the local authority with responsibility for drainage (another major problem), they are all mates and have worked together at a consultancy firm. Where is the impartiality at the local authority if their mates are involved.

The developer is pretending to be better than the likes of Barrett and Wimpey et al, so why are they behaving like they are? Because they can as my wife will say!!!

So! Are people all over this once great country of ours being treated as badly by this high handed bunch of money hungry greedy gits.

Greed is the creed of our time:

Developers- New Housing

Morning All.

I am sure many people are experiencing building development in their area, this is not about whether development should take place or the alleged lack of housing.

This about the way developers ride rough shod over communities.

I have a development just starting behind my property, the planning process was shoddily handled with bullying, bribery and intimidation being the norm.

A new and supposedly better developer has bought the site but the again they have little concern about the local community, despite being "AWARD WINNING"

Yesterday (Friday) I had a visit from this developer in the mid afternoon, it was about my boundary with them. He took me out to his site an proceeded to detail to me how my boundary was in the wrong place. The timing of the visit ensured that I could not contact my solicitor!!!

There are many issues with the site which I have been fighting for a long time and have engaged local politicians to assist.

This is just one more issue, has anyone here had problems with developers and how are they dealt with.

The community was divided on this and there was no organised group to negotiate better conditions, we therefore have a very dense BARRACKS development in the middle of our village.

It would be very good to hear the experiences of others.

Thanks for reading.

Stressed out as usual!!!

Re: How was Cycling 2019 for you?

Not a great cycling year.

1300 miles on road, mainly meeting mates at cafes. :D
Spent most of the spring walking, to prepare for a climb of Snowdon in May.
Trying to move house and failing.
Lots of wrong weather
Lots of caring duties and nursing home visits.
Now Mrs halla retired there are more diversions.

Next year I hope to have more miles and less excuses!!!

Can only be optimistic that the bikes come out to play more!!

Re: Shimano Acera Rear Hub

Very grateful for the replies.

I have looked up the links and found the part that most looks like the one needed. However I have noticed that the rim does not have much life left in it.

The bike is for a friend who will do limited mileage so I have reassembled with new bearings, just to keep it going for a while longer. He does not want to spend much on a bike. Rather like a lot of people £50 is too much.

Thank you again.

Shimano Acera Rear Hub

Good Morning All.

Just stripped down a Shimano Acera FH-M290 rear hub. The Non drive side ball bearings are badly pitted and the cone has some pitting. I have some replacement ball bearings but I am having trouble locating the correct replacement cone, part number.

I cannot find a date on the hub but the bike was built in 1997/1998

Does any one know the part number of the cone or a suitable alternative.

Many thanks for your help.

Andy
