M530 pedals are double sided. If the pedals you bought have clips on one side and a flat pedal surface on the other, then they are not M530. It sounds like you bought one of Shimano's various touring pedals, e.g the A530.

You are correct -- what I'd bought was the A530 ( a big heavy brute of a pedal ) -- returned now -- the shop didn't have the other options except the M520 but haven't bought them yet ( I want to look at the M324, T8000 or EH500 mentioned ) -- I thought I'd order a nice light pair of flat pedals for every day use ( the 30 miles round trip to work ) and screw on the M520s' for club rides to start with then I'll probably stay on the clips as I get confident with them.

I've been using the mountain bike for the run to work just to get my legs used to it's geometry and pushing the heavier bike ( in preparation for some mtb events I do and it is very comfy ) I have the wee flat bar bike ( giant rapid 1 ) for days I got up too late which gives me about 10min extra time. Eventually if the racer ( Arkose R2 ) proves handy with it's cleats I'll probably sell the giant.

Re: What Has Made You Laugh Today ?

Ordered a personal number plate for an Xmas present -- the woman on the phone said would you like a border around the edge. I said I don't think we're allowed borders in northern Ireland. Which is probably true in both senses -- our mot is very strict -- you don't go to your local garage to get it done -- there's no such thing as an advisory -- if you get one you've failed.

All these has beens coming out from the woodwork. We have already heard from Blair who birthed UKIP that lead finally to Brexit, with his allowing thousands on thousands of eastern europeans to come into the country un checked when the rest of europe imposed limits. That these people think they have any right to pontificate amazes me

Re: Cleats shoes pedals where to start ?

Is the function of multi way release simply in the type of cleat or is it a function of the pedal clip type?

Re: Cleats shoes pedals where to start ?

Had a read of the instructions today ( M530 ) before I checked the forum and found they are indeed as Zen describes ie single way release whereas the shop told me they were multi release -- to be fair the chap was new to the job and said if it wasn't what I needed I could return them.

There's another reason I'm returning them -- they are neither one thing or another -- by that I mean they are flat alloy pedal one side and clip the other plus they are heavy. I'm a great believer in having one tool do one job well instead of a multi tool that does nothing well.

So here's what I'm going to do -- I'll buy a multi release clip double sided -- it'll be light and do the job well -- I'll buy a set of good plastic flat pedals like the ones on my MTB ( they are very comfortable and light pedals ) if I don't get on with the clips --

Back to shoes -- is there a shoe that has recessed cleat that let's you walk without your toes pointing up or that have a built up heel? ( maybe I'd better read all the replies before I said that )

Re: What Has Made You Laugh Today ?

Installing drivers and an application on my laptop when the usual installation progress bar arrives I notice it's captions changing

-- installing driver
Please wait
-- installing driver
This may take up to 5 minuits
-- installing driver
And how was your day?
-- installing driver
I suppose it was OK till this endless installation started.

Re: Cleats shoes pedals where to start ?

Thanks chaps -- went out and bought a set of M530 pedals with cleats included -- that's one bit done now for the shoes -- I'm fussy about shoes -- not the look but just the fit and comfort.

Noticed how heavy they are compared to cheap plastic ones.

Check the wheels aren't buckled -- they are worth a few hundred on most bikes now.

Cleats shoes pedals where to start ?

Bought a road bike and going to try cleats clips or whatever you all them -- where do I start ? -- had toe straps many years ago but found the pulling up caused pain in my knee joints -- learned not to pull up when pedaling problem solved. So want clips / cleats to keep my position on the pedals but would like the option of flat side/ clip in side so I can were my normal shoes for quick runs to the shops etc.

Re: sweating

Does anyone suffer from chronic itching -- days after a couple of hours sweating on the bike? It's like my body is getting all the toxins out via sweat.

Personally for below 4C, I use a Buffalo cycle shirt as the only garment, excellent. If you sweat, then simply remove partially, at the cafe, and shake. Sorted.

I've had a few Pinnacle cyclo cross frames which I've rescued from ex racers who have traded to to carbon. They are exceptional builds, and the paint on them is very tough also. They can take a load of abuse, and they angles I find quite relaxed and very good for touring. I used one of these ex cyclo Cross bikes to tour Sweden a few years ago and I had a blast on it. Very responsive and super reliable. Wouldn't think twice about buying an Arkrose

You should work for Evans --- anyway it'll be here tomorrow hopefully -- I'll let yous know what I think.

That's mainly a problem with early or poorly made carbon frames where aluminium parts are bonded directly to the carbon. Better frames will electrically insulate the aluminium, so there is much less risk of corrosion.

Cowsham wrote:8 A threaded BB if possible but not a deal breaker.

This is related to the above: I much prefer press-fit bottom brackets, especially with carbon or titanium frames, because then I can use plastic cups instead of aluminium, eliminating galvanic corrosion entirely.

I've used bikes of all four common frame materials for commuting. All of them can work fine, but my current ones are carbon and titanium, with parts carefully chosen to avoid corrosion, since they get ridden every day in the winter, covering them in salt I am too lazy to wash off, and they are left out in the rain all day.

Your a harder man than me Mr Evil.
I live near the north coast of Ireland so salty sea air is a factor and everything needs to be well coated in oil - I use carplan tetroseal waxoil round exposed metal etc seams to be better than hammerite waxoil

Re: CAAD 12 Durability for commuting.

I've a pinnacle Arkose R2 on it's way -- so opted for aluminum ( 6013 ) -- I've never in all my years of cycling had any corrosion issues -- probably cos everything gets a liberal spray of oil and grease before almost every journey ( apart from when I'm touring when it may get about 2 sprays in a week, though only to knock the dirt and grit out of the cassette etc.

One thing crossed my mind when you mention carbon frame is, would the oil and grease sprays I use cause damage to a carbon frame?
A question if I ever decided to get a carbon bike -- Evans has a 30 trial period if the bike doesn't suit you can swap it for another so in theory could end up with carbon.
