Road ,gravel or mtb you can have stiff and supple sidewalls, grippy or long lasting harder rubber thats leathal on wet or mud.Have you tried tubeless or other than Marathon style tyres?PH wrote: ↑16 Jun 2024, 9:42pm Can you really get 35mm tyres in a Yukon? Is that without guards? I've only seen 28's with guards, that's pretty much the same restriction ....
I'm running Jack Brown 700C x 33.3 mm on my VN Yukon on Mavic Open Pro and they fit just fine - in the summer, enjoying the extra plushness whilst the mudguards are off and "on holiday". Rivendell have them made by Panaracer for them to fit their bikes that have road bike brake clearances...

Despite the extra plushness and larger air pocket in these lightweight (c.300 g) high- volume 33.3 tyres, the substantial extra stiffness conferred to way it rides by the very over-sized tubes of Van Nicholas frame - with its 1 5/8" down tube / 40mm ) comes through very noticeably compared to my lightweight steel frames (1 1/8"
down tube / 28.6mm ) running 28/25 tyres which are less stiff and transmit less road jarring.... so belying the myth that comfort is "all in the tyres".... That immediately noticeable extra rigidity may be welcome if you are carrying a load, but for unladen day rides I leave the Yukon at home and take a lightweight steel frame where I feel the feedback in the frame and appreciate its suppleness over the road...

Re: España: Via de la Plata o Camino del Cid?
The road version is an old main road,,,,
The off road ( pilgrim route) is much better and more scenic, easy with a bike with gravel width tyres.

The bridge ( east cycle lane ) has always been open during the works. Only time the cycle lane was closed was due to High winds one night and they forgot to remove the barrier in the morning,,

Sheldon Brown died in 2008, 29 is still going strong,as bike packing is gradually overtaking cycle touring.plancashire wrote: ↑4 Jul 2024, 5:53pmThere is an unambiguous ISO way to measure that, too, in mm across the rim. Then you know all you need to know to decide on tyres that fit the rims safely. Maximum tyre width is also of course dependent on clearance from the frame and rim brake reach, if you have them. Sheldon Brown describes 29" as a marketing term.Mtb tourer wrote: ↑2 Jul 2024, 6:21pmTrue, but how wide are your rims, that's the difference.plancashire wrote: ↑2 Jul 2024, 5:57pm
2.25" x 29" = 57-622 ISO. A 29" tyre is just a fat 622, which is also a 700C.
Or is that true as everyone is marketing bikepacking racks, as always cycling is reinventing itself.

My touring/gravel/bike packing bike can take 2.25 by 29 tyres with mudguards if necessary. It was originally marketed as a touring bike with 37 mm tyres. Google Trek 920 touring bike.

Re: York rally
No people don't drive in for the day. It's just that the days of Traders off loading old stock at York Rally is over, no need to cycle to the tents. Just sit in front of the computer searching for cycling bargains all year round . Why have an expensive trip with a van trying to sell old stock to tight cyclists at York. The auction is interesting, all the vultures hopping to pick up nice old custom bikes for peanuts.

I think that they were being polite or having a wind up about how the British cyclists manage to survive cycling in traffic.Pinhead wrote: ↑19 Jun 2024, 2:51pm I went to my usual cycle stop today and was amazed.
There were two nice chaps about 26 from France who are spending three weeks cycling round the UK.
We got talking and one point they made was that they are very impressed by the courteous good drivers as compared to France.
As I have only been to Paris once many years ago the only recollection I have was being near missed by moped riders on the pavements

Re: Wider rims and bigger tyres for touring
The reason why we can fit bigger, wider tyre is that caliper brakes and cantilever are replaced with disk . No rim wear and better braking in the rain and wet muck. The gravel bike is a modern version of yesterday's rough stuff bike and it's still evolving , My touring/gravel/bike packing bike can take 2.25 by 29 tyres with mudguards if necessary. It was originally marketed as a touring bike with 37 mm tyres. Google Trek 920 touring bike.m-gineering wrote: ↑24 Jun 2024, 11:58amThe rim will give trouble long before the tyre. If the tyre is very wide the tyre pressure will act mainly on the outer edge of the rim, with the largest leverage. So make sure the brake track isn't worn excessively, and don't overinflate the tyre

Security, we had 2 portable barriers to lock the bikes to in the cyclocamping area. If you are worried about security take bike that's undesirable. One of my friends in the campervan area said that the security were doing circuits in cars, was not pleased but he was on the perimeter.Only fault was the state of the grass cutting, not short enough and whoever done it never hoovered up the cuttings.

Cycling UK? Why no presence at the rally. Another question why wear cycling tops with Cycling UK and CTC logos on them. Wish I kept my old club tops. Has anyone joined the French cycling organisations as they are still supporting touring events.

veloviewer Explorer App
Looks like its not supported anymore in Google Play Store. Was taking forever to update runs to show new tiles.
It's a good little game to encourage you to cycle different routes rather than having a list of rides you do often.
Still working on an older phone, I deleted it on my phone to try and reinstall . Found out it's not on the App Store anymore, was stalling and crashing, another app killed by Android updates.
