Had the same problem fitting cantis on an old touring frame here in Denmark. All the new brakes were too wide and just didn't fit. i found these which work really well and were cheap:

They're from a German firm called Point and I assume imported from China:

I've also seen them sold under the name "Force" and a quick google search shows them available in a few other countries:

Hope this helps...

I've been using these on two bikes and very happy with them. Always possible to release from the cleats in all directions(not just sideways) and have never felt 'trapped'. I've never experienced that panic feeling and have easily released my feet from them even in 'emergency' situations. Recommended and I wouldn't go back to ordinary cleat pedals.

Best Wishes Brucey. Get well soon. We miss you and your wealth of knowledge and your willingness to use that wealth to help others. I'll include a picture of my new bike. I think it's a bit over geared. Cheers mate!

Re: Bottom brackets advice and suggestions
I use an old Stronglight 100lx Triple from the mid 80's. I bought a new sealed BB, a Shimano BB-UN55 BSA with 128 axle length (not knowing about ISO and JIS differences) and, of course. it was too long by about 10mm (4-5mm on each side) being an ISO triple. I had difficulty getting the chain up on the large , at the time, freewheel cogs. The taper is slightly different and the ISO cranks don't go as far down, although in reality the ISO, JIS are interchangeable and work very well. I then acquired a II8mm BB-UN55 BSA and this fits perfectly. I later bought a Shimano Acera triple 42/32/22, for lower gears and this also performs well on the 118mm axle, although the website recommends a 122mm length.

So really you don't need an ISO BB and 1-2mm on each side of the axle doesn't really, in my experience, make a difference. A sealed BB is also an improvement, fit and forget, doesn't come loose and is sealed from the elements. Shimano UN-55 are also good quality.

Re: Dia-Compe ENE 11 Speed Down Tube Shifters
I've always tried to keep the cycling simple and easy to change components, a bit of pick and mix, but after going 'modern' one has to choose a path, MTB or road etc and stick to it. I'm thinking of trying Microshift thumbies, but then found out they wouldn't fit my handelbars, being an example The new stuff in my opinion, is better, cassettes over freewheels, better gear changing, modern tyres and so on.
By the way, the cable routing is over the bottom bracket, the frame is 531st and gear studs were brazed on the next years model from '84. The frame ('83 Mercian Classic) cost £125 in 1984 and i bought it from a little shop on Westgate Road in Newcastle, which i've forgotten the name of. Anyone remember?

Re: Dia-Compe ENE 11 Speed Down Tube Shifters
Cheers Brucey
The SunTour levers are right at their limit with 10 gears and do unfortunately jump on the larger cogs, not all the time, but often at an innoportune time. The cassette is 11-34 and a Stronglight 100lx triple at the front. I'm a pretty sedate rider and not prone to *honking' so frame whip wouldn't, i think, be causing it.
By the way what does BLB band on fitting mean?. Anyway, if i can't figure something out i'll just drop it and try indexed thumbshifters and sell or swap the Dia-Compe shifters.
The Sun is trying to break through the clouds here in Denmark and the open road is calling so i'm away for a ride. Hopefully more replies to read when i get back. Skål!

Dia-Compe ENE 11 Speed Down Tube Shifters
Hello everybody
Reading this forum for years, but this is my first question. I bought a Mercian Classic frame in 1983 and have built up various bikes with it over the years. Last year i decided to go modern and bought a set of Rose 105/Mavic wheels, a ten speed cassette and a Shimano XT RD-M781-SGS 3 x 10 gear rear changer. I've been using Band on SunTour Power ratchet shifters for years, but they really haven't the range for the new setup. It's the usual, they slip on the largest cogs and have to be tightened up too much for comfort. I then bought the Dia-Compe ENE 11 Speed Down Tube Shifters
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/gear-shifte ... -shifters/ having read they would fit on the Power Shifters band after removing the levers. Well, they dont and after some fettling they still don't really fit. I've been looking at these two solutions, which seem to be for Shimano levers.

Any help and suggestions appreciated, as i 'm thinking of just dropping the idea and going for Microshift 10 speed thumbies.
