Purely as background material take a look at Patrick Leigh Fermor's book "A Time of Gifts". He walked to Istanbul between the wars. 2nd instalment is titled "Between the Woods & the Water".

There are *Three* variables in an index system, ie sprocket spacing, mechanism geometry, & the one you forgot, cable pull per click at the shifter. If you use Campag 10 Ergos then wiring up the cable normally indexes Shimano 8, altering the anchor hubbub style indexes Shimano 9 & with a Shif...

Time ATACs have a horseshoe shaped reflector which fastens onto the end of the pedal where it won't get squashed. Nice pedals too.
