Re: Looking for a mechanical engineering cyclist

Thank you everyone.

So many good points and things to consider and delve into.

:D

Not sure if that emoji is correct in saying "I'm overwhelmed in a good way with so much good information".

Lol I was just thinking polystyrene would make for a cheap and easy first few attempts!

Re: Looking for a mechanical engineering cyclist

I don't really want to explain the details of my pedal for various reasons.

I've tried many pedals and found different pedals with attributes I do like and want to combine those attributes into my ideal pedal.

There are insane amount of pedals for "race bikes" and "MTB bikes" but slim pickings for urban pedals.

I doubt my idea is revolutionary but think I can combine ideas into something far more suited to the urban/commuter cyclist.

As I work on a bicycle and have talked to so many others in my profession I think I could make something that would appeal to a broad market - possibly.

A wooden model to start sounds like a low cost idea one of posters mentioned. As mentioned I could add it to a pre made bearing and "arm" (unsure technical name) to try out. Thanks. Can't weld so that's out the question.

Do that then. Sketch what you want, and suggest commercially-available pedals which could be cut up to build the pedal you want.
Or do I mis-understand you?

I think you understand me mostly correctly.

I can sketch by hand a crude representation of what I want.

I can also reference parts of commercially available pedals to inform my crude drawings better. Though cutting up existing pedals and joining bits together I think would not help as parts would not "gel" together.

How far have you got too!

ultimately you need a 3-D model.
(3-D model, you would then use this to develop your ideas and produce drawings for manufacturing)

This is where you need to start but you will have to pay someone to produce models for you.

Is this for personal use or are you intending to develop it for business.
If it's going to be for business then you possibly want to tie things up with nondisclosure.

i'm actually in the same position as you, but I've not progressed much on my ideas although I have many ideas, I also come from an engineering background and have 3-D modelling software.
I am also capable of machining everything myself with the right machines of course, I have no machines at present but there are probably plenty of idle machines around the country at the moment with people with not very much work.
Also probably plenty of design engineers with nothing to do either.

Drawings are easy once you have a model.
That's a virtual model on a computer, but has full technical parameters.

That's why I'm looking for a engineer / student engineer to build a first version. Someone who lives near me that I can sit with and figure it out with their technical know how and input.

It's an idea I've been playing with for a while. I do 10 000 + miles per year on my bicycle for work and think it's a good business idea. So personal & business.

Honestly Jonathan - if I could do technical drawings or CAD files I would be doing it all myself.

I can sketch what I want and I can reference various pedals for pieces of the pedal I would like to make.

As far as solid model goes: that is what I assume protolabs is for & why I'm looking for an engineer to progress idea to a physical prototype that I can put on my bicycle and test out on the road.

Looking for a mechanical engineering cyclist

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a mechanical engineering cyclist or some kind of engineer to help me build a prototype set of pedals.

I've tried many types and styles of pedals but never found anything for my type/style of cycling.

I emailed superstarcomponents.com as I saw they had made some pedals from scratch (https://www.superstarcomponents.com/en/ ... pedals.htm) and they directed me to protolabs.co.uk and said it would be cheaper.

Problem is I got lost in the site with all the technical stuff and don't know how to progress with my idea.

So here I am looking for some kind of engineer or student of engineering that can help me build a prototype. This could be good for a student looking for a project that s/he can submit for their studies?

I do have some money to build a few prototypes but am on a tight budget.

Someone in South / South West London would be ideal.

Any pointers or suggestions most welcome.
