Re: Extra Roomy Bike Shoes

I'm a fan of Sidi Mega for my boats. Need a bigger size than normal - I have 46.5s for my normally 45 feet

Re: Colnago super 1995 value?

I'd guess around 400-500, the asking price for some of the bikes on Fleabay are quite ridiculous, the sold prices somewhat lower. As has been said you may get more if you split it up - more work though. You could always try on here in the classifieds and see if there is interest (way too small for me btw :D )

Re: Bike Recommendation for Heavy Rider

I've got a few suggestions:
A second-hand 90's mountain bike with non-suspension forks & 26" wheels. These are generally pretty rugged. If the wheels and frame etc. are sound you can replace the transmission & tyres to get a pretty decent bike for around 200 quid. Use until you drop some weight and then use as a second, pub bike
Something from https://www.fahrradmanufaktur.de/en/fahrrad/trekkingrad.php, pretty solid German touring bikes. I use one of them for commuting
Something from https://www.genesisbikes.co.uk/bikes?categories=Bikes~Touring, pretty solid British touring bikes, I've got one of their Ti audax frames for my "nice" roadbike
I'm sure people will be along with other suggestions. I'm just over 100kg and I've never had a problem with any bike so, despite warnings I'd say you'd be fine with anything that's not "featherweight" if you can get to around the 110 - 120kg mark

I have no desire to learn but my two daughters learned pretty quickly. My niece also started in her thirties and managed Pedal for Scotland from Glasgow to Edinburgh on one.

Re: Has anyone bought wide shoes recently?

Sidi Mega for me. Strange sizing though, I normally take a size 45 but need a 46.5 in the Sidis. Keen fit me well as sandals and shoes but I haven't any cycling specific versions. I'm a 4E or G fitting and Shimano are way too narrow for me.

I very much doubt that this will ever be handed over to the Senate as the Democrats are too scared that a trial will bring out all sorts of information about Joe and Hunter Biden's dealings, inter alia, in the Ukraine and elsewhere.
I would love to see all the information being brought out in court but I doubt that it will ever happen; it's purely mud slinging from the Democrats who should be spending their time finding a credible alternative prior to the next election.

A few days ago I was chatting to an American friend about this situation. He’s a swing voter who once supported Trump (can’t think why beyond being fed up with the Liberal Elite) and now doesn’t like him. His view is that the Republicans will stand behind Trump regardless and that consequently the Democrats are wasting time and resources by pursuing Trump. He feels that the Republicans need to identify - and focus their efforts on - candidates and policies that the American people will vote on mass for, and that the recent U.K. election results point out what failure to do that will achieve.

Did you mean Democrat there?

Re: Peugeot with Reynolds 531 frame tubes ( info sought )

Please post some more photos. I've got a Peugeot from 1979 and I might have an idea on the model or vintage. As Brucey says the bike is probably from the late 70's and the parts are likely to be French dimensions. The picture of the seatpost he posted is identical to mine except for the black on it.

700C is a French sizing term, but the same.

Therefore, any of the above should fit my rims (within reason re width)... :?: :?

28" = 622, always....? oh no, if only it were that simple, I would have said so.

The reason why some 700C tyres are marked 28" is because they pinched one of Mr Dunlop's many 28" tyre/rim sizes. That still leaves plenty of others. For example 28" x 1-1/2" is a size which is still used and fits to a 635mm rim, so ~40-635 in ISO. There are other (now rarer) sizes too, which in some cases the French also pinched and called 700A, 700B, 700D and so forth, all using different rim diameters. 28 x 1-1/2" tyres are 700B by the way.

cheers

Whilst Brucey is, of course correct, the "usual" definition of 28" (certainly in Germany) is 700C, ETRTO 622 and it's unlikely you'd encounter anything different which wasn't clearly identified.
The new MTB and gravel bikes, as previously stated now use 29" for 700C, usually with decimal imperial sizing e.g. 1.75 or 2.1. They may well be marked on the tyre with the metric dimensions e.g. 622x54
To get back to the original question I would say most 700C (622mm) tyres fit a 20mm internal rim and certainly a 1.75 could be used to replace a 2.1. There is no difference between wired and folding bead as far as fitting is concerned but be aware that, despite the standard there can be big differences in ease of fitting between certain tyre/ rim combinations

Re: Ortler Saragossa

I've no experience of them, tried googling in German but also no luck on finding reviews. I think that if the price is good it looks a reasonable trekking bike if that's what you are after. Lower end but perfectly adequate components and no cheap-and-nasty suspension fork.
What's the price?

Thanks for the tips. I'll follow up on them at the weekend when I get some time again.

Brucey, already found that the cup is harder than the wrench :(

Removal of non-fixed bottom bracket bearing cup

Hi,
I've just bought an old mountain bike (early 90's I'd guess). It's in a bit of a state and I'm planning to do it up to use as a pub/ city bike. I'm trying to remove the bottom bracket cups as there were no bearings in it :( . I've managed to remove the damaged fixed cup and the lockring from the non-fixed cup but I'm really struggling to remove the non-fixed cup. I don't have the Shimano tool (six pin I think) but have had a pipe wrench on it - only effect is to put thread marks in my wrench without moving the cup at all. I've applied WD40 but no movement whatsoever.
Any suggestions?
Before anyone asks - yes I'm trying to turn it in the correct, anti-clockwise, right-hand-threaded direction :D

Re: 1.2 million E bikes sold in Germany

Just a few observations from someone who lives in Germany:

When I'm out cycling at the weekend I see loads of e-bikes. Once a year the South German Wine Road is closed to motorised traffic and there are 1000s of cyclist, travelling the route. Two years ago when I cycled the route I'd guess at least 50% of the cyclists were on e-bikes, probably more if I'd gone this year.
Contrast this with commuting:
I realised around March this year that I'd just seen the first e-bike commuter this year (sort of like the first cuckoo of spring :D )
I started looking to see how many e-bikes are in the bike park at work - currently 3 out of around 70 bikes in total

My conclusion is that very few people here are replacing car commuting with e-biking atm. Pretty much everyone I see are using them for leisure. OTOH I have seen a few e-Bakfiets with parents using them for shopping and transporting kids - quite likely people who don't have cars rather than people abandoning cars. The city where I live is pretty bike friendly (facilities, weather and lack of hills unless you venture south of the city) with very good public transport links and car sharing facilities so a car isn't really a necessity for a lot of people

Norman H wrote:A pair of back rollers and a bar bag should be more than adequate for hostel touring. The Ortlieb dry bags are a cost effective way of expanding capacity. The 13l size are a good fit crosswise on top of the rack and are more than large enough to contain even a 4 season sleeping bag. For more capacity, but a little more expensive, the 31l rack pack is excellent and can be attached by using the buckles of the Ortlieb panniers.

I'd agree. It's not exactly answering your question but I wonder if you need all the stuff you seem to want to take? I use two, partly filled panniers (similar to the back rollers) and a bar bag and that's more than adequate for 10 days. If you need to take a bulky sleeping bag then you could put that in a dry bag on the rack.

Re: Is Trump Mad?

Psamathe wrote:There was an interesting commentary earlier today on the radio about why he's pulled out of visting Denmark and it has nothing to do with their PM not being prepared to talk about selling Greenland.

Apparently Obama is visiting Denmark a few weeks after Trump was to visit (Obama giving some talk and/or Q&A to students in Northern Denmark) and the thought is that Trump is scared Obama will undoubtedly draw a large crowd and he will get a few people all of whom will all be booing him and the US press will report the comparison extensively. So he's scared about the comparison so he's cancelled his visit. And Obama's visit was only announced a week ago so Trump cancelled his visit pretty soon after he realised Obama was going there....

Which also feeds into another wild speculation from a talking head I don't hold much regard for (Trumps ex PR guy that lasted for less than 2 weeks, can't remember his name) but his thought made a lot of sense. He was saying he thinks it likely that Trump might pull out of the next Presidential elections. His supposition is that Trump has such an ego and is such a narcissist that standing and losing would be a disaster for that ego and, as the news and polls get bad, so Trump will look for an excuse and he thought it likely that Trump would pull out of standing for another term around next March under some daft excuse (bone spurs maybe?) but purely becaus ehos ego could not stand it should he lose.

Ian

Quite frankly I think that is utter nonsense.
The media constantly show pictures of empty seats wherever he goes - even if they know the rest of the venue is packed so it would be hardly unusual
His poll ratings are consistently good and improving. The Democrats are doing terribly as they can't field a single credible candidate. Any who could make a credible opposition, such as Gabbard, won't be allowed as her anti-war stance doesn't quite fit in with their war-mongering agenda (who's the only president who spent the whole of his two terms at war?)
I think your TDS is very strong here
