Re: Bike security - what do you use? Locks?
For cycling to sport, shops, pubs etc. I have a relatively old bike locked with a U-lock which I just slip over the handlebars to cycle with. I lock it to something if I can otherwise just the wheel to the frame. For commuting I can leave my lock at work and lock my bike to a proper bikestand. for touring I have a small U-lock and a cable carried in a pannier. Usually just additional security as the bike will normally be in a hotel or B&B. For day trips I'll only be parked at the pub and I'll be sat outside in the sun with my beer

Re: N+1: Opportunity of a Lifetime
For me it would have to have Campag and I think would add a saddle to make the rides more enjoyable

Pretty sure I've got 50mm on mine with 700c, 40mm tyres. Plenty of space. Have 63mm on my wife's with 26", 50mm tyres

Re: Made to measure cycling shoes - anyone?
I'm another one with 4E width fitting (New Balance or Asics). I'm very happy with Sidi Megas. The sizing is a bit strange so although I take a 45 normally I have a 46.5 in Sidi. I think the half sizes are even wider so that helps also. definitely worth trying.

Re: Sidi shoe sizing
I normally take a size 45 G fitting in shoes. I need 46.5 in Sidi Megas. Felt slightly big at first but very comfortable for a days cycling especially in the heat of summer

Re: Hub Dynamo for winter commute.
I've been using an Alfine one for the past five years (ten mile/ day commute). Done absolutely nothing to it in that time and still running smoothly. Have the B&M Cyo lamp; would be better with a bit more light for the dark lanes (it's still ok though), but more than adequate with street lighting.

One of my chums has used GP4000S on his summer bike for a few years now and he has worked out that;
a) he needs to chuck them in the bin when they are a year old (even if they are not worn out) simply because they go hard, and
b) he needs to use something else in the autumn/winter anyway because they are not grippy enough (at any age) when it is cold and wet.
I've been using GP4000s II for a couple of years and have no problems with them going hard. Can't say I've had any problems in the cold & wet either but I do most of my winter riding on trails using another bike with On One BSC Type 2

Think you've answered correctly. I'd just replace the chain like for like

Shimano - Sram 8-speed compatibility
Tried to search for this but got a bit confused so trying on here.
Trying to fix a friend's bike: mountain bike with 8-speed Sram. My question is whether I can replace the (broken) derailleur and worn cassette with Shimano or whether it has to be Sram. Bit of a downmarket bike so trying to fix it as cheaply as possible.

Totally agree with the last post. Best thing you can do is to support the idea and say you'd love to pay for a part of it

Re: Planet X - customer service
Ordered a couple of times, each time had problems but they resolved them:
1. Sent the wired, not the folding version; sent a barbag without the handlebar bracket. I live in Germany so in they told me they'd send out the correct tyres and the bracket but it wasn't worth me sending the tyres back. In the end (about a week) they sent the exact same tyres again and eventually realised they had no brackets left (it was the last bag). End result a refund on the bag and I gave up trying to get the originally ordered tyres.
2. Sent 700x28 tyres rather than the 26"x 47 I'd ordered. This time they sorted it out in two days & sent the correct ones.
Cycling shorts are definitely lardarse Brit and not Italian cyclist size. I need at least xxl in Castelli, xl in PX are way too big despite the measurements telling me that they are correct in xl
Still recommend them.

Re: Garmin Edge Explore GPS Cycling Computer
Got my wife the 820 Explore. I use Bikemap.net to plan routes - very easy and can recommend it - I export the route as a .gpx file (standard feature in bikemap) and download to the Garmin either via the Garmin Basecamp software on my PC via usb or import into Garmin Connect on my mobile and then via bluetooth; haven't had any problems so far. The device has had the one blip requiring the engineering solution of a switch off and switch on
but has only happened once in 15 trips so far. Battery life is a around 8 hours with the display on, should be a fair bit more in "power save" mode.
I'd happily recommend it. Paid €250 a couple of months ago.
