What started this debate off was I was talking to staff a Thorn cycles about a new chainwheel on my Brompton and it was mentioned that there was Twelve links to a foot and promtly sold me a chain that had 102 links ie counting the rivets? so never mind.
Pete try www.epicidiot.com/sport/chain_length_calculator.
half inch pitches per rivet therefore two outer to one inner = one link
Thanks for you help every body

chain link
I have been in touch with thorn cycles and they say twelve links to the foot so that seems to confirm the chainlenth calculator as per link two half inch pitches = one inch but you have three rollers. does that make sense

Knee problem
Ref Nobby 28/05/07 Sore knee,
I have spent approx 3 months off the bike due to hernia repair. I have developed a muscle soreness/ pain right side of right leg level with knee where the small leg bone joins (Tib Fib) I can never remember which is which.I am 61 young and have not had this problem before my lay off. My bike was made to measure at Longstaffs last year(November) and I have ridden with cleats for the first time since the November and had no trouble.
The pain starts developing after about five miles, and it is linked to rotation of the leg. No problem when walking or going short distances in my bike.
I am seeng my GP this week and am going to ask to see the pratice Physo. The ony problem is that he is not the cycling type so I may have problems getting to the bottom of things. Is there any members out there that are?
Regards Tom

Thank you gentlemen for your comments,
I always replace the tube rather than the puncture repair, it saves time and messing about ,sometimed in bad weather. I have in the past damaged the paintwork on my bike trying to fit the rear wheel and chain while holding the bike up at the same time.I think what we all need is a magical collapsable trypod that will fit into a matchbox and a good bungey

Field puncture rear wheel
Have any of you had any ideas of how to repair a puncture in the rear wheel when miles away from anywhere without scuffing brake levers (STI)
brackets and sundries on the handle bar, seat etc.
Thanks for any advice

John The hernia you have got will not heal on its own, you need the repair operation, this with me was done at my local hospital day surgery and key hole. you will be advised what you can do and when but it has taken me 2 months to get back to cycling ( I think the older one gets the longer it takes). In the mean time take things easy on the bike as you could make things worse. The pain will not be long but if like me you will get phantom aches from nerve ends for some time don't worry about the swelling and bruising of the neather reagion it is nomal.
