Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Selective drafting again: " Writing in his blog on Friday, he said the UK would "cash in" if it left without an agreement as it would not have to hand over £39bn to the EU and would be able to spend the money instead on enabling even greater wealth inequality in favour of the very few...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Wonder how many drafts the final version went though?
"Foreigners and their families will need to apply to the UK Re-settlement Scheme to continue living after 31 December 2020." Discounted because UKIP no longer a threat to Tory marginals?

Re: Do you drink too much?

My 17th consecutive dry Xmas. I chalk this up as a success, but with no judgement of those lucky enough to be able to have a few or indeed a lot.

Re: Train reservations

Very limited experience, but just the one return journey Nottingham to Tywyn convinced me that a Brompton only sensible answer. I had booked a cycle reservation for the services (2 changes on out, 4 on return) on which possible because I was undecided which bike to take. On one of the return legs, h...

Re: Do you drink too much?

"Many people under- or overestimate their alcohol consumption, sometimes deliberately"

Most GPs automatically double whatever amount a drinker tells them that they consume. When I used to tell the truth and they did the sums they got REALLY worried!

Re: When I'm dead .........

"In the space of a few weeks we used two separate branches of the Co-op and we found the service - both customer service and committal service by the celebrant - excellent." FWIW I also used the Co-op - and excellent is exactly right. The on-the-day Director was, by chance, female and we s...

Re: When I'm dead .........

Funerals are not for the deceased, they are not there. They are for the living. My wife died in August. She would never really say what SHE wanted, despite knowing what was coming for some months. So, went for simplest basic - yes, cheapest - "conventional" cremation. Luckily we all three ...

Re: Who is the real enemy - Russia or China?

I view China's world dominance, directly and/or indirectly in different countries/continents depending on THEIR preference, as pretty much an historical inevitability. They will of course have stooges/puppets to prepare the way in some of the most tech advanced nations, ideally thro' existing multi-...

Re: Do you drink too much?

djnotts Well done! I hope there is nobody among your circle who tries to tempt you just for the hell of it. I've seen several people doing that with people who have quit smoking. Thank you. I don't have a wide circle of friends and I avoid situations where drink is the focus! I can and do occasiona...

Re: Do you drink too much?

"Glad you got over it. Lucky for you."

Thanks - takes more than luck though I assure you. And never of course "over it" - I still want a drink pretty much every waking hour and nearly all my dreams revolve around alcohol.

Re: Do you drink too much?

Zero for last 15 years 7 months and 3 weeks. What I had reached before that does not appear to be "on the scale" - 2 bottles of spirits - gin or brandy - a day. And I'm sure way over the "limit" for at least 35 years. As for any recovering alcoholic, Xmas is always hard. The pubs...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Time to split the UK geographically and manage mass internal migration I suggest. I can see no prospect of bridging such a massive philosophical and political divide as now exists, including by age. I do not wish to be considered part of the same nation state as supporters of brexit.

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Good summary of the Brexit process to date from the Graun: UK: We are leaving. EU: We wish you wouldn’t, but if you must, there is a process with one fundamental principle: you cannot retain privileges of EU membership without an obligation to uphold EU law. With that in mind, here are the options ...

Re: Electric Assist Conspiracy....

"very limited market for carbon race bikes with gears lower than 20"," Yes there is! Just that I happen to be it! I want the lightness and comfort of carbon but with low gearing. Could create my own, but no longer even any high quality triple road set ups. Nearest I've managed is mixe...

Re: Electric Assist Conspiracy....

Well, yes, 20" and below achievable on tourers and mtbs, but my point was that if even low 20s on a CARBON race rig instead of the 30" that nearly all such come with (and are very difficult to customise) then I wouldn't need a motor. And "they" want me to need assistance - better...
