We need to do a deal. Buy only USA brands and we'll be left alone.
"The Daily Telegraph says the government is willing to rework, external its Online Safety Act in order to avoid Donald Trump's import tariffs. The paper says the law, aimed at tackling harmful online content, is thought to be heavily disliked by the president, because it can levy massive fines on US tech companies." (BBC News. Sic typo!)

Re: Trump
Presumably revoking security clearance from Biden and numerous other opponents a first step to prosecutions. Now that DoJ firmly under his control
his ."......return to the White House will put him in a position to push for criminal charges against his political opponents, such as former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other members of Congress."
Apparently some Republican critics also in his sights.
If they're lucky might get deported to Gazusa?

Not sure why differential tariff treatment for folders v non-folders (other than to benefit Brompton!), but cheap end of e-bike market about to get even "cheaper".
"7 February 2025
A government decision to scrap tariffs on Chinese e-bikes coming into the UK has been described as a "kick in the teeth for British manufacturing".
Border taxes were imposed on Chinese e-bikes following Brexit, keeping the UK in line with the EU, but the Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds has accepted a recommendation to lift them on non-folding e-bikes from Friday.
The Trade Remedies Authority, the body responsible for reviewing tariffs, said the move allowing cheaper Chinese imports could save consumers £200.
But UK-based companies have called the decision "strange" saying it's a blow at a "very scary time" for the industry.
British based e-bike companies expressed concerns about the impact of a potential "flood" of cheap Chinese e-bikes entering the UK." (BBC News)

Re: UK Politics
@Nearholmer, I agree your analysis, but reading it in such stark terms is beginning to depress me even more than usual! Thank goodness I am old - and being tested and investigated yet again for another csncer visitation. I am unlikely to see the worst come to pass.
I fear for my children and grandchildren.

Re: UK Politics
^ Thanks. Skimmed. Makes sense.
"According to Overton, the window frames the range of policies that a politician may recommend without appearing too extreme to gain or keep public office given the climate of public opinion at that particular time.[4]"
The problem and key is of course WHO creates and defines the "climate of public opinion". Organised religions (the rich). Aristocracy (the rich). Bankers (the rich). Capitalists (the rich). And now just....the rich. Relative sway/power varies over time but one
descriptor seems constant.

Re: UK Politics
Increasingly i find myself confused by "UK Politics" and the terminology. For example:
"History will judge Boris Johnson as one of the most damaging prime ministers in British history, Reform UK chairman Zia Yusuf has said.
Yusuf told the BBC's Political Thinking podcast Johnson would not be welcome to join Reform UK.
The Reform UK chairman criticised Johnson's record on the Covid pandemic, immigration and public spending when he was prime minister between 2019 and 2022.
Yusuf said there was "nothing Conservative" about Johnson and branded the Tories an "extremely left-wing party" in government." (BBC News)
I agree with the first para judgement but find the last simply bizarre. Tories, Johnson, "left-wing" ?? How???
Does the man actually THINK this?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOB MARLEY!
BORN 80 YEARS AGO TODAY!
Unusually (for obvious reasons) I remember exactly where and when I first listened to Bob. A mate's flat above a mini-mart in Leeds 6, shortly before the shop was torched in trade dispute (!).
Loved it then and now.

^ More likely Trump will have ICC arrested!
"The visit comes as Trump is later expected to impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court later on Thursday for targeting the US and allies such as Israel, the BBC understands"
Given moves against DoJ etc Trump is moving faster and more comprehensively towards total 1-man rule than even Hitler achieved.

Wishful, if nice, thought! No other state would dare - apart from those whose leaders should be in same category. None will act against even Israelis. The most guilty are quite simply "above the law".

Re: Trump
Perhaps he is actually going crazy-mad.
"Donald Trump restates his plan for a US takeover of the Gaza Strip, after his idea was rejected by Palestinians and leaders around the world on Wednesday
Writing on social media, Trump says Gaza "would be turned over to the United States by Israel at the conclusion of fighting"
Palestinians "would have already been resettled in far safer and more beautiful communities, with new and modern homes, in the region," he adds
Trump's plan won't happen, writes our international editor Jeremy Bowen, but it will have consequences
Trump announced his Gaza plan on Tuesday night, saying he wanted the US to take a "long-term ownership position"" (BBC News. My bold.)
