Re: LEJOG April 2019

Unless you had some specific reason, you might wish to reconsider a section of Day 16, the planned route takes you on to an un-surfaced farm road and involves unnecessary climbing. Suggested amendment* Day 16 At 11 mile point turn left on to B 9176, *then after approx 200 metres turn right on to the...

Re: The Tragic Proliferation of ‘Drive-Cycling’

Somehow, by creating off road infrastructure we have ended up turning cycling from a fuel free way of getting around to just another reason for burning gas. Just the reverse on a local route in my locality where the numbers of people walking and cycling was falling year on year disincentivised by t...

Re: Should you have lights on during the day?

I don't want to be distracted from dangers on the road by vehicles exhibiting their completely unnecessary 'look at me' lights when travelling in compliance with the law.

Terra Nova offer a lifetime guarantee, why attempt to fix it yourself?

Re: Getting to Lands End from Scotland to start

Inverness to Crewe on the seated sleeper, then change for day train to Penzance should get you there for around £130 and sufficiently rested to start cycling that day, and without the faff of assembling your bicycle.

Re: Bruges To Amsterdam Newbie

I was hoping I can just buy like baguettes or cheese or something from any old shop along the way and eat it as I go, Keep a lookout for cafes or small restaurants with 'uitsmijter' on the menu. They are a knife and fork job rather than carry out, but provide a good feed for a hungry cyclist. Basic...

Re: EV 12 Ostend to Denmark

Perhaps things have changed, but getting from Dunkirk ferry terminal into the city was less than straightforward, a little research there would be worthwhile. It adds interest to see the changes through France, Belgium and into the Netherlands. I think it likely that you will want to stray off the E...

Re: 2 weeks tour from Dunkirk and back - where to go?

There is a posting in this thread (10 June) which suggests the possibility of returning from Ijmuiden to Harwich. I'm afraid this is not possible. The ferry from Ijmuiden goes to Newcastle. The only ferry to Harwich is from Hoek van Holland. Thanks for pointing out my error, original post now corre...

Re: Train from Inverness to London

I have just booked the London to Inverness for Tue. I rang British rail who transferred me to the caladonian sleeper bookings. They got me a man and bike for £50 in just a few minutes.. Yes, that's the standard price for a seat on the sleeper, bikes go free but must be booked. I trust you are aware...

Re: Air horn to deter pedestrians

Pedestrians dont have priority on the road except to complete crossing the road, usually at a junction. Peds and joggers SHOULD stick to the pavement but when they don't they become a nuisance. Pedestrians have priority in that motorised vehicle drivers are required to take action to avoid them, ie...

Re: Air horn to deter pedestrians

I don't think debs was talking about footpaths or anything off road. So the answer to your question of where pedestrians can go for a quiet stroll is "not on a carriageway". I appreciate that many country lanes are pretty quiet, but nevertheless they are carriageways: expect motor vehicle...
