I have had damaged like that happen to a couple of tyres over the years. One was recent and the tyre was a Schwalbe Big Apple. The other was many years ago and the tyre was a brand new Marathon Plus. In both cases I believe it was due to me running over large flints (I was cycling in the (Chalky) Chilterns on both occasions). It was the back tyre in both instances. The flint was flung out with quite some force as it escaped from my back wheel as I ran over it. Of course I don't deliberately try to ride over flints but sometimes you can avoid them with you front wheel but the back wheel follows a different track, especially if you are going slow because you are picking your way around potholes or climbing.

I was particularly gutted about the Marathon Plus because it was supposed to be puncture proof and it had only been on the bike for a week.

Here is an old post about it. I had forgotten that I tried to boot the Marathon Plus and the boot left me down. With hindsight I should have scrapped it immediately.

Re: Mystery abandonment

Many years ago when I was living in the Northeast, I visited a crag at a place called Sunnyside about 20 miles from where I was living. I didn't bring a lock with me so I left the bike at the bottom of the crag while I wandered around the crag with the intention of doing some bouldering. I thought the bike was well hidden because I laid it down in a patch of bluebells.

Imagine my shock when I wandered back to check on it about 20 minutes later and I found it gone.

I followed the path back to the road way where I re-found the bike, much to my relief. Someone have had removed my bike from the beauty spot and taken it back to the road/entrance. I guess they thought it was an abandoned bike.

Re: Durable Chains...?

I'm using a wippermann/connex "100" chain which is a 1/2"x1/8" with bushings which seems to be similar to the KMC B1. This wippermann is the bottom of the range one that doesn't have any special coatings, but it does say "case hardened pins"

I am using a 1/8" chain even though I only have 3/32" chainring and sprocket at the moment. I might swap to a 1/8" sprocket if the current one wears out or I decide to change the gearing. The original chain that came with the bike when new was a shimano 3/32" chain. Am I correct in thinking that the 1/8" chain will wear better than the 3/32" ?

This is for an E-bike (for commuting). Apparently wipermann do an E-bike chain (1E8), but I didn't bother with that.

Re: Keir Starmer's vehicle hits cyclist

There is a news article on the BBC website: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-54701336

A spokesman for the Labour leader said: "Keir was involved in a minor road traffic accident on Sunday.

"He spoke to a British Transport Police officer who attended the scene and swapped details with the officer and the other individual involved."

and below that:

The Met Police said it was alerted by the London Ambulance Service at about 12:20 GMT to a report of a collision between a cyclist and a car in Grafton Road.

"The driver of the car had stopped at the scene and exchanged details with the cyclist but had left before officers arrived," the force said in a statement.

So the labour spokesman is saying Keir Starmer spoke to a British transport police officer and the Met police are saying no one hung around to speak to us.

I think former poster BristolTraffic was responsible for that output.
Perhaps he gave up because they are self-parodying.

It is not necessarily a bad thing that they (ABD) are giving evidence before a select committee. If the MP's are doing their job properly, the ABD should be taken apart.

Re: Press fitting a cartridge bearing onto a BB spindle

I work at a site where they have production lines for electrical machines (generators and motors). Some of the parts are interference fits, i.e. they use the heating/cooling trick that Brucey describes. But they use liquid nitrogen to do the cooling  . Liquid nitrogen is a bit difficult to get hold of. I was thinking what could you use if a freezer wasn't cold enough? Dry ice !

rmurphy195 wrote:Another trick I have used is to employ the aerolastic strap that I keep on the pannier rack. Especailly for the back wheel, the elastic wrapped around the rack and a hand bit of fence will hold the bike up. Might need to use a non-elastic luggage strap though for the weight on yours!

toe straps? I store one on my handle bar.

Re: led front headlamp

Looking on the Busch and Muller web site they have a "Classic" dynamo headlamp. I don't know where you would buy it in the UK though.
