My turn for the second vaccine today. I had it about 7 hours ago and I am still feeling fine. My brother who is 5 years younger than me had his second vaccine about two weeks ago.
I had a health scare about 3 weeks ago and I am glad to have got the second vaccine because I was feeling a bit vulnerable and I am having to start back in work just as the number of cases is starting to pick up again.

I overheard one part of a conversation with an elderly lady while in the supermarket today
Have you had your anti-vaccine (sic) yet?

Re: Photochromic lenses
For some reason this made me think of Peril Sensitive Sunglasses (Douglas Adams). So much more useful that Ultraviolet or electrically operated lenses. They help deal with symptoms of the problems faced by the modern cyclists: close passes, potholes, slippery road surfaces, intersecting paths of other road vehicles. What's not to like?philvantwo wrote: ↑31 May 2021, 10:37pm You need a pair of variotronic glasses Mick F!
They use an electrical charge to change the lcd crystals from dark to light in 0.8 seconds!!

Re: Pneumonia/Good questions to ask my GP
Vorpal, Mistik-ka,
Thank you for the links to the websites.
By following the link I found a guide for the time for different stages of recovery. They were much longer than I was expecting.
I will add questions to my GP about Covid vaccine and pneumococcal vaccine.
ThirdCrank,
Good advice. I had a look at getting one or both of my landline phone and mobile phone to work on loudspeaker but I think they are too old to be able to work that way (My mobile phone is the type with real buttons). I can't change the equipment so it will have to be a one-to-one call after all.
I still haven't spoken to the GP. She has called two days running but I have missed the call each time. Fingers crossed she will get through today.
Many thanks to you all.

Re: Pneumonia/Good questions to ask my GP
Thanks Jdsk
I was surprised that they didn't try to get me to cough up a sample of the bug. Unfortunately I didn't have a cough initially and couldn't cough while ill.
They took lots of blood samples, small vials and larger bottles. My brother who used to work as a lab technician in a microbiology lab told me that they can use the large bottles to detect what the bug is. I am not sure how that works.
Will do
Yes, the hospital doctors asked me about my occupation, my work and home environment. I recall they were interested in dust and damp. Unfortunately I have both in my home. My house needs a good spring clean and I need the roof fixing. I have been using a dehumidifier to manage the damp until I can get that done.Once you're over the acute illness there might be some interest in why, where and when you got this. What was the organism, and have they been into that already?

Yes, I would like to get the vacuum cleaner out and clean up but I fear I might make things worse. My brother who I live with has asthma and hates me using the vacuum. I can only use it when he is out of the house for the day. Then there's the risk of something similar happening again, which depends both on your health and future exposure.
Hope you're better soon.

Pneumonia/Good questions to ask my GP
Hi all
I have unfortunately been struck down with bacterial pneumonia. Not feeling too bad at the moment, considering.
I fell ill on Friday. I contacted the GP Surgery on Monday where a doctor told me to go to the local hospital. I was transfer to a different hospital on Monday morning and was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday evening with medicine and a letter which has also been sent to my GP. I contacted my GP and had a phone call back from them but unfortunately my brother took the call and told them I was asleep. They are going to call back today.
Can any one think of good questions to ask my GP? (Not necessarily about pneumonia specifically).
Questions I t:hought of are:
Does anyone have any general advice on how to get the best from my telephone meeting with the GP.

- When can I return to work
- When can I ride an electric bike
- When can I ride an ordinary bike
- When can I drive a motorcar
- What are my test results and what do they mean
- What appointments/check ups should I do and when do they happen
Does anyone have any general advice on how to get the best from my telephone meeting with the GP.

Re: Interesting phenomenon with iPad
Wild guess: Birefringence?
I don't know what display technology your iPad uses. Some of them have things like polarising films in them, and liquid crystals that have funny optical properties.
I agree it is an interesting phenomenon.
Edit: googling for "Do liquid crystals exhibit birefringence" seems to return a number of results that say "yes they do", so I think my guess may be right.
Of course if you say that your iPad has an OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display, that blow that theory out of the window!

I know it's a light hearted comment to make on such a serious matter but the depiction in the Private Eye special of the rogues gallery of responsible individuals as postages stamps with a third class denomination was so appropriate.

Re: Possible first foray into tubs
I think the thread Shimano freehub body internals is relevant. User TheBomber posted several pictures of a knackered freehub that Brucey described as 'Rest in pieces'. I think that particular freehub was made from Titanium. Steel is a better material for that particular use case if you are after a long component life and don't care about shaving a few grammes of weight.
Edit: this post by Brucey says
Ti isn't really strong enough for a freehub body, not where the pawls engage. You end up being 100% reliant on there being more than one pawl engaged at the same time, even if you are not pushing that hard on the pedals. What tends to happen is that freehub bearings wear slightly and then you can sometimes get one pawl engaged and one half engaged, and of course the half-engaged one breaks the top off the tooth on the freehub body. It is not long from then that it is 'game over'.

Given the number of lamas and alpacas I see when cycling around my location, you could be forgiven for thinking that the Incas had colonised these shores

I saw an advert on the back of a bus recently (in the last week) that had a car, a bike and an arrow showing 1.5 meters. This was in Buckinghamshire.

Re: Found washers in Spa TD-2 crankset
If you can't find the missing washers maybe you could make new ones by cutting them from an Aluminium coke can? It is quite easy to cut with scissors and you can stack up multiple layers to get the desired thickness you want.
