I go for the "micro towelling" ones with a little bit of pile to them, much nicer-feeling than the smooth type and more suited to a rub-down than the patting method you describe. Mountain Warehouse do them.

It may seem ridiculous to have a zero-post member wishing a speedy recovery to a forum icon, but after many hours recently spent trawling back over years of the Technical section in search of arcane bits of knowledge, the gentleman under discussion has already been of immense help to me.
