Re: 20-25 tubes in 28mm tires??

You may well be OK using unpatched undersized tubes, which will stretch to fill the tyre, but once the tube has been patched it is much more likely to fail due to excessive stretching. This is based on experience, not theory. Given that new tubes are pretty cheap, using undersized tubes seems false ...

Re: English Language - what "Does your head in" ??

Thanks, tc, I like that. Haven't come across that story before. So (pedantry alert!), was it a rooster, and not a gander, that attempted to incubate the golden egg?

Perhaps someone will be along soon to suggest that wisdom and gender are somehow related ?

Re: English Language - what "Does your head in" ??

My reaction was personal; far be it from me to insist that my preference should be taken as a rule. Busses somehow 'looks' wrong, just as 'alternate' rather than 'alternative' grates on me. At least there can be no misunderstanding with the double 's'; as the saying goes, they often come along in tw...

Re: English Language - what "Does your head in" ??

An interesting digression into public transport, but I'm not sure the queries re destination displays are really language issues. Confusing inaccuracies, maybe? But bu ss es, rather than buses? I guess you might argue that either might be acceptable, but for me, well, the double 's' "does my he...

Clearly visible from here. OK, only 30 or so miles from me in W. Yorks - but isn't the internet thingy international ? :D

Re: Porridge: love or hate?

For years I've made mine with 'Porridge oats' plus 50-50 water and semi-skimmed milk. Am now mostly using 'Jumbo oats' plus 50-50 water and 'oat drink' (Alpro, usually). Tastes good - the oat drink is naturally slightly sweet. I top it with stewed prunes and Latvian kefir. The kefir seems good for t...

Re: EVs (electric cars)

One recent authoritative study concluded that using a typical western world mix of renewables and fossil fuel generation methods, small capacity, lightweight petrol cars of 800kg or less are typically less polluting across their life cycle than electric alternatives, and a greater proportion of the...

Re: Porridge: love or hate?

Porridge is so simple yet it somehow reaches into fantasy, or is my perception not quite right? Read about the World Porridge Championships years ago, could not be sure if it was a factual report or a satire  Sounds like a joke, but I believe it to be true - with the winner being awarded the ...

Re: Alarm?

I, too, can recommend pyracantha to repel intruders - and puncture footballs, penetrate leather gloves etc . . .

Will need a bit of patience until it's established, though. Trembler type alarms and security lights in the meantime?

Re: Porridge: love or hate?

Thanks.
I'll ask around (doubt that Sainsburys, Safeway etc will sell them!), so maybe next time I come across a friendly miller? Or catch a whiff of those lovely smells you describe as I'm out on the bike . . .
