Re: Disappointing Weather

I too, have ridden down the middle of the road using the white line as a guide and once I turned off into a lane kept the shadowy form of the hedge at equal distance on either side... thankfully the only car I met was also driving extremely carefully, with drivers window down and watching the white...

Re: gear ratios

Absolutely. All the bikes and trikes but one in our house have 20" wheels, only my wife's Hybrid has 700C wheels. Calculating the gears as if they all had 27" wheels would be pointless. Byegad, on this occasion, I can't help feeling you are missing the point. I don't think anybody is sugg...

Re: SPD Pedal Reflectors

Regarding the steady amendment and relaxation of the blue beacon rules, I remember a lovely story about a traffic officer who opened his mouth and put his foot in it leading to one of those amendments. It was around the time that the police realised that these nice fast motorways were going to need ...

Re: First road incident

Evening peoples, Thank you for all of the replies :) A couple more bits of info, it was the driver. She had just pulled up from work and parked outside of her house. I will be giving all parked cars alot wider berth from now on... Purely through my inexperience with this kind of thing, I felt fine ...

Re: Legal Status of Traffic Sign

No, it means "do your best to bully cyclists off the carriageway where they belong" (at least to any motorist)

Re: SPD Pedal Reflectors

I've just installed a 1800 Lumen front 'searchlight' which was £32 from Hong Kong. Its no worse than a Lumicycle that retails for £260. Except for the poor sods coming the other way. Using things like that without the ability to dip to a properly shaped and adjusted beam when there is oncoming traf...

Re: bike trailers and computers

On the trailer, you want the largest wheels with the widest tyres you can find if avoiding jolts and bumps is paramount, and keep the tyre pressures low - they aren't carrying nearly as much weight as they would be under a rider on the bike, so pressure needs to be adjusted (downwards) accordingly. ...

Re: Minister criticised; didn't know cyclists allowed on roa

And apparently a big chunk of the meeting yesterday was wasted arguing about whether cars pay for roads. Does winding up a politician really achieve anything? It does if the result is that he is shown to be so incompetent that he gets drummed out. Even Cameron must be able to see that he is a liabi...

Re: What's wrong with square taper cranks?

I don't think it's all that difficult to make good quality ST BBs, or anything wrong with the basic technology. That it's possible to get failures is true of most technologies, particularly when a wide variety of qualities are available and a huge range of fitting ability is allowed for - especially...

Re: Head on overtaking - what can I do

I accidentally found an effective deterrent once, when this happened to me on a motorcycle, and I was actually forced off the road. The verge had a gravel drain in it, and as I crossed it the large-ish (1-2" diameter) stones scattered everywhere - including all over the front of the overtaking ...

Re: Taken by police from dual carriageway !!

Surely the risk of being misidentified as a motor vehicle further away* is only a danger if the lights are a symmetrical pair? I always take care not to use lights in that configuration, for that very reason, but I do use both flashing and steady lights, at least one of which is fully compliant with...

Meanwhile, I'll continue to ride my class 1 invalid carriage at night with it's pedal reflectors obscured but it's overall level of illumination vastly greater than required by law

Re: Alfine "sticking" in sub-zero temperatures

This is one thing that WD40 is useful for.
The WD in the name stands for Water Displacer, and it's water freezing in the cable outer that's the problem, so if you displace it, you get rid of the problem.

Re: Taken by police from dual carriageway !!

I would certainly be taking it up with their superiors, either at divisional of HQ level. But then I also look like a red-washed christmas tree from the rear at night - 2 flashing and three steady red lights, plus reflective arm and leg bands with flashing red LEDs in then plus about a square foot o...
