Re: The Book of Trespass

Who would decide who had exclusive use? Presumably the landowner

Re: The Book of Trespass

Basically: If you don’t have ownership of land then nobody would be able to do anything with it. Build a house? You are denying others access to the land. How could anyone farm a field if they (or someone) doesn’t own it? Otherwise what is to stop someone else digging it up. Clearly at some point nobody owned land and we were all hunter gatherers but once that situation stopped then land ownership became fundamental to human society.

Re: The Book of Trespass

I believe it is called private property. Just like owning a bike.
Before people get too excited by this subject. Right to roam works pretty well in Scotland & has done for some time. (Albeit Covid related staycationing seems to putting it under pressure at the moment)

Re: sustrans cuts routes

The routes that have been removed are generally those where either (a) the average traffic speed is too high (over 40mph), or (b) the traffic volume is too high. That might not be a problem for confident cyclists like you and me, but it is a problem for lots of the sort of people that Sustrans wants to attract to the NCN.

The issue is that the sort of people who ride from, say, Edinburgh to Newcastle aren’t likely to consider a quiet road with traffic over 40mph as being dangerous per se. You don’t have to be a rabid vehicularist to use these sort of roads. Are Sustrans just abandoning these sort of people?

Re: sustrans cuts routes

Frankly it gets worse when you look at the specifics of what they have done. There are bits locally that should definitley have been taken out if you are talking about good quality cycle path, but they have been left in, and certain road sections which seem to have been arbitrarily removed no matter what they are like to ride in reality. I really think they have shot themselves in the foot over this.

The last couple of years Perth & Kinross, I think Angus too have been changing lots of rural rounds around these parts to 40 (complete with plates for "Cycling and walking friendly road"), I imagine it may be a more general thing. I've noticed these as they tend to be on the sort of roads I choose to ride on rather than there was any fanfare about it. It's very welcome.

Pete.

That's good to hear. I wish they'd do that around around here.

I dunno. Thirty seconds after I first came across one of these signs I had to throw myself onto the verge to avoid a tipper lorry coming around a blind bend at about 50mph.

Ever stood by a red light and watched cyclists ignore it. After all we know that thousands of cyclists ignore red lights. A fact we can all observe whilst driving our cars.

Re: Which group is the worst? Is that fair?

Plenty of cyclists have been injured after colliding with pedestrians....
I agree that stereotyping is a problem, but it doesn’t mean that all groups are equal. However, I personally divide road users into those who are considerate, careful & attentive to what they are doing & those who aren’t. There are examples of both types contained within each group.

Algiers. You were the one who asked the question.

And I am interested to get your answer.
My follow on question does not need or get an answer, does it?
I was pointing out why Nickwi's parallel was irrelevant.

Well. I assume since you mentioned Algiers you wanted to know if there were any. There are. I conclude that most countries still commemorate people and actions which are morally dubious. I suspect that Mongolia still celebrates Ghengis Khan, despite there being a sizeable proportion of the world’s population being descended from women he had personally raped.
I have no doubt of the extent of racism in America, and indeed here as well. But I can also recognise bandwagon jumping when I see it.
