TRAINS (AGAIN)

This isn't about space on trains, just cost. I have 2 journeys in mind, one the Pilgrim Trail across N Spain, the other, the Western Isles. Looking at train fares to get to each, and that's when the joy of British railway travel bites. From Roscoff in Brittany to Bayonne, close to Biarritz, would co...

Re: WESTERN ISLES

So the consensus seems to be - suck it and see!!
Good idea to wait and see how the weather forecast is looking, especially travelling a long distance to get there.

You can't book, but there's usually room!

Checked the website and they look well worth a stay. Thanks for the link.

Ah, TrevA, we say the same to tourists here in Cornwall, with as much truth!

Re: WESTERN ISLES

Thanks again for the info, especially for accommodation. I don't want to carry camping gear particularly!
Surely it can't rain every year!!
Maybe the wind could help push us Northward.

Re: WESTERN ISLES

Thanks for the info.
From what I've seen of others' comments and a couple of Scottish TV films it looks well worth chancing poor weather.

Re: WESTERN ISLES

Thanks. I can live with rain, but past experience of midges on Skye has left me running scared!

WESTERN ISLES

Does anyone have views about touring the Isles in May?
I know the weather can be variable, but May or June look like good prospects and, hopefully, midge-free.
Thinking of working North from Barra.

Agree. Really good couple of programmes, especially being the same age and liking my campervan too.

Re: Carry on Parliament!

We don't pay sewage and we don't pay drainage. We just pay a flat rate for water supply no matter how much we use. Maybe we would save money if we went onto a meter, but we don't care as it's cheap enough and we don't worry about water usage. People down the lane asked for a meter but Southwest Wat...

Re: Loire a velo. Logistics.

Have you looked at http://www.cycling-loire.com? Lots of info there and a cycle-friendly rail service between Nantes and Orleans. Have been talking of it with Mrs Dodger, so maybe see you en-route. We plan to drive to one end and train back. Mrs D prefers going down river, so we might start at Orlea...

Mmmm. As an empire, think 'tis a bit lacking in the impressive stakes! Rockall just about sums it up.

Re: Flooding.

A close relative works for the Environment Agency and says that they are routinely asked to comment on plans to build in flood-risk areas, such as floodplains. He says they always advise against it, but frequently their views are ignored by developers wanting a profit and councils wanting more housi...
