Re: Better hub brakes (floating trailing shoe?)

If I do, will post back Rob. I use the bike for carrying shopping once or twice a week for example, so the difference over time is getting noticeable. Off topic a bit re: the Rods. Unlike the Danish Raleigh's with rod operated drums, these are linked. One brake lever across the handlebar operates bo...

Re: Better hub brakes (floating trailing shoe?)

Question for David WS - I can see on the drawing & photos of your Swingcam that the Brakeshoe Fulcrum is fixed to the reaction arm & am trying to figure how the Cam moves. Does the Backplate & Cam pivot about the axis of the Axle, its movement damped by the large wavy Spring? (and by not...

Re: Better hub brakes (floating trailing shoe?)

I have drums on my Dutchbike that are suffering from poor performance due to leading shoe wear. They are rod operated and despite being Sturmey hub geared, the brakes & hub shells appear to be of Gazelles own manufacture. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2701/5765464952_d841403358.jpg 1306511889448...

Re: Nexus 3 speed hub + coaster brake

@Bob - Cheers for that - had a look this morning & it did in a fashion. I couldn't get the Damon Rinard Excel file to work though so googled it & found this - http://lenni.info/edd/ - Rinards file built into a webpage.

@Squeaker - Long piece of wood at the ready!

Nexus 3 speed hub + coaster brake

Hiya - wonder if anyone can help. I've been offered a nearly new Shimano Nexus hubgear - the 3 speed one with coaster brake - that I want to use on an old 12 speed racer with 27" wheels. I'm townifying it a bit with upright handlebars & suchlike, want to rebuild the rear wheel myself - have...

Re: help me, i've a bee in my bonnet

Found this in minutes on Google & your local authority prob states the same on their website. A mate of mine had to reduce the height of a fence for the reasons stated within because it bordered an access road.

Re: Jacket or Softshell

+1 for the Montane Featherlite smock. I made mine a considerably more water resistant by washing it in a proofing agent. Mine withstood a full on thunderstorm for over 30 minutes. In winter I use a Montane Extreme Smock which is not only really warm with only a Short Sleeve base layer top but is wa...

Re: Wider caravan to come or not

... Unfortunately caravans been towed do not go slightly slower, they spend longer braking & getting up to speed, they cannot take bends anywhere near that of a car or even a lorry. So when I'm stuck behind another caravan averaging 35-40mph on national speed limit roads(non motorway) this DOES...

Re: Wider caravan to come or not

Considering that quite a few caravanner's seem to think that it's fine to drive without towing mirrors - which as well as being a legal requirement and giving a view down the side of the caravan, also give the driver an appreciation of how wide the caravan behind is, those extra inches aren't going ...

Re: Proposal for a new campaign

Pretty sure you're wrong regarding emission standards for buses - it may be the case that the offenders are older vehicles. The more recent buses run by the company I work for use 'Adblue', an additive made from pigs urine no less, which acts as a catalyst in the exhaust. And yes, they are clean, ve...

Re: First shopping by bike, I mean Trike

Nice one CW  I do most of our shopping with bike & two big panniers. Before getting the panniers though I did a few trips using a single seat kid's trailer we bought for the youngest. The best moment was when a nice old lady popped over for a nosey at what she thought must have been a nipp...

Re: Now this is a bike lane

Looks like some near me. Exactly the right width to park a car in with no fear of it overhanging into the carriageway...   Without a whiff of sarcasm, must say how surprised I am by the amount of blue sky thinking in the comments left on the newspapers websites. You know the sort - ...

Re: Lightweight speed

I now know why a (very svelte) colleague can go 50 miles on a banana whereas I needed a full English and several flapjacks. I was lugging 14.5 stone of me around as well as the bike. Enjoyed a day off today, so took my 8 year old out for a tandem ride. Pulling up behind a queue of cars at around 1 ...
